Unfortunately, irrational drugs and combinations, banned and bannable drugs and combinations however continue to flourish in India. We have around 5,000 drugs and combinations whereas most essential drugs lists recommend no more than 350. Even though most drugs and combinations may not be considered rational they are heavily promoted, widely prescribed, and consumed, bringing considerable monetary burden on the public as well as the exchequer, and of course doing harm in terms of unnecessary and toxic effects!
The W.H.O. had initiated efforts to promote rational drug use in 1977 with the introduction of the concept of essential Drugs. Subsequently, this list has been revised every few years 8 times. The idea behind this concept is that a limited number of medicines would lead to a better supply of medicines, better prescribing, lower health care cost.
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have generated their own list of essential drugs in line with this policy, and are drawing considerable success.
The present workshop seeks to put before the participants irrational drugs, irrational prescribing behaviours and cost and damage involved, concept of Rational Use of Drugs, Rational Drug Policies, etc.
The workshop thus seeks to enlighten the participants, so that they could explore, and then draw up an agenda for need and implementation of a Rational Drug Policy for Goa.
