Melinda, Thank you for your good wishes. My wife was their primary teacher for the last 9 - 10 years that we have been homeschooling. This year I have started teaching Math and Science for the older two. In hindsight, I should have probably stepped in much earlier to share the responsibility with her :) I am quite enjoying it and relearning old concepts as I do so.
We follow a very flexible routine. NY state requires that we file a letter of intent with the school district, and submit quarterly reports to them keeping them abreast of our progress. At the end of the year, our children are tested using a national test and the results of that test is sent to the school district. Our children maintain contact with other children (peer and non-peer) through associations similar to Boy Scouts, church, community programs that our Town offers, events at the local town library, sports camps, music recitals etc. They also get together with kids from our street to play together too. Like I said in an earlier post we don't keep them hog-tied at home :-) You have raised a very important point re: maintaining contact with other homeschoolers. We are part of a homeschooling cooperative called Long Island TEACH. None of us can claim to have intimate knowledge about everything and so we come together to pool and share our strengths and to go out on field trips together. I'm not aware how popular homeschooling is in India/Goa. I know it seems to have made great strides in Japan for some reason. If I become aware of any homeschooling families in Goa, I will definitely drop you a line.
