(NT) SIFY OPENS TEN NET SERVICE PROVIDERS: Sify "I Way", India's largest and the most acclaimed Internet service provider, has opened up ten I Ways in Goa. Spread over Panaji, Calangute, Baga, Candolim and Porvorim, it aims at providing for better Internet access to the State at faster and cheaper rates. Sify is present in over 45 cities across the country. The I Ways are operated on high-speed wireless Internet broadband, which allows faster speeds and better connectivity. Each PC will have a unique bandwidth greater than 64 kbps and this is made available due to the wireless broadband technology. (GT) EC AFFIDAVIT PUTS CANDIDATES ON MAT: Candidates for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections may have to think twice before filing their nominations as a five-page affidavit with details of movable and immovable properties among other information, will for the first time, be displayed on the website. (H) MICKKY SINGS BJP PRAISES: Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco has decided to throw his weight solidly behind the BJP candidate for the South Goa Parliamentary seat. The flamboyant Tourism minister has decided to not only assume BJP's responsibility in Benaulim, but two other Assembly segments in the minority-dominated Salcete taluka-Loutulim and Navelim. (H) SECRETARIAT UTILISATION: In a consensus arrived at on March 2, the "Palacio Idalcao" (Secretariat Building) is proposed to be used for public purpose after the secretariat offices shift to Porvorim in May this year. The committee constituted to examine various issues regarding conservation of the building met yesterday for the first time to discuss and generate ideas for purposeful utilization of the building once it is vacated. (H) VILLAGERS HOLD MORCHA ON ICAR: Nearly 40 villagers from Adnem village in Quepem taluka took out a morcha on the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Old Goa, demanding stern action against the killers of Ashok Dessai, a junior technical assistant at ICAR. Dessai succumbed to severe injures on 24 February after he was brutally assaulted by one Kanuram Birua of Jharkhand. (GT) WOMEN FOR CAMPAIGNING NOT TICKETS: Women are made use of in politics as and when they are required for garnering votes. Their services are called for campaigning because they can reach out to women voters more effectively. But they are conveniently forgotten or rejected during ticket distribution. This was the view of an experienced part-time politician-cum-lecturer, Radhika Nayak, former chairperson of Ponda Municipal Council. She was speaking at a symposium on "Is Woman Competent in Various Fields-such as Politics, Social Work, Art and Culture, Journalism, Economics, etc", at the Kala Academy Black Box on March 2. (H) YOUNG GIRL MISSING: Mystery surrounds the disappearance of a 24-year-old girl from her work place on 26 February. The police have registered an offence of kidnapping against her fiancée. The complaint has been filed by the girl's brother. (GT) SALVADOR-DO-MUNDAO PANEL TO CHECK HARASSMENT TO WOMEN: The Salvador-do-Mundo gram sabha on February 28 formed committees to monitor developmental works and sexual harassment to women at the work place.The Panchayat collected taxes to the tune of Rs.2,42,579 in 2002-03 leaving arrears of Rs.4,00,805, which includes house tax of Rs.3,51,008. (GT) REGULARISING COMUNIDADE ENCROACHMENTS: The State government has prima facie accepted the request to regularize some 4,140 illegal encroachments in Goa's comunidade lands, but a host of legal issues and proceedings are hurdling the process, according to details provided by Revenue Minister Pandurang Madkaikar. According to Mr Madkaikar, the government had received over 9,000 applications for such regularization and 5,000 of these had been summarily rejected. (H) VEGETARIAN FIESTA: The Vegetarian Society, Goa Chapter, will organize a vegetarian fiesta from March 5-7, at the Collectorate Gardens, (Opp Menezes Braganza Hall and the Ferry Wharf), Panjim, from 6 pm to 10 pm. The event is organized jointly by the Vegetarian Society and the Corporation of City of Panaji. The evening will be full of entertainment with live music, dance and cultural events. There will be stall catering to various types of cuisine and health drinks. (H) POLYTHENE IN SOFT-DRINK BOTTLE: Paresh Naik, a shopkeeper at Maimollem-Vasco, has found polythene and some fungus in a 200-ml 'Mountain Dew' soft-drink bottle recently. (NT) VERIFICATION OF PHONES AT PARRA: The General Manager of Goa Telecom has directed the Mapusa Exchange to carry out detailed verification of all numbers falling in the urban and rural areas, regarding rentals to the telephone lines working from the Parra exchange. This follows the claim made by residents of Parra, who stated that Parra village falls under the category of rural area and hence rental of Rs.110 should be charged to them, instead of Rs.250 per month. (H) CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP: The Cambridge Society has invited applications for free scholarship from students residing in Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat and who have secured admission at a college attached to the University of Cambridge, UK, for Under Graduate, Post Graduate or short duration course to commence in the academic year beginning October 2004. (GT) PROGRAMME FOR WOMEN: Bailancho Saad will organize a programme on March 8, at Azad Maidan from 3 pm to 6 pm where women from different parts of the State will articulate their struggles and their strengths through various cultural forms. (H) COSTLY POLITICIANS? Under the head of General Administration & Coordination, Goa's Council of Ministers costs the State nearly 2.5 crore. Over one-fifth of this, o Rs.58 lakh, goes to paying salaries of ministers and deputy ministers. Strangely, a sum larger than this-Rs.65.10 lakh-is allocated to discretionary grants by ministers. Of this, apart from a ten thousand rupees, the rest all goes for discretionary grants under the chief minister' s award for administration and cleanliness of panchayats, municipalities and corporations. Another Rs.30 lakh are allocated towards "tour expenses" of ministers. Running the offices of the ministers will cost another Rs.95 lakh.
