Dear Goanetters, I believe that postings based on hearsay do a great dis-service to society. Seb, please verify before you put it down in a posting. Lavish praise, be miserly with your criticism--well intended though it may be.
I have worked for the Goa Government---and have been offered bribes from the very first month of service. When asked, some of the persons told me that they thought it was expected of them. It was an impression created by loose talk as you seem to generate. One person, officially recognized as a Freedom Fighter of Goa , even offered me a bribe exceeding nine months of my salary, by the time I had worked for as many months.Perhaps, he had become a 'freedom fighter' the same way. He even lodged a 'benami' complaint against me, but did not succeed. You cannot bribe everybody, everytime. He was subsequently attacked and killed by a microscopic amoeba flying on the wings of a mosquito. We gained freedom to be honest, without a fight.Malaria did him in. I worked for the Government for 15 years without accepting a rupee in bribe or 'speed money'. My brother served in the Customs for 13 years the same way. I am on pension, he is not. We have done our duty. Whether one accepts it or not, so do thousands of others. They may not be high profile, they are honest nonetheless. If the incident you relate happened at Dabolim airport, did this gentleman/lady share it with you in the taxi or in the airport itself? Did s/he lodge a complaint with the vigilance cell or send an email to the CVC. Or is it a cock and bull story? If not, get us the details and post them on the goanet. It takes courage to apologise for making unsubstantiated allegations. Viva Goa.
