Rich Tributes paid to Alex Fernandes at launch of KAJA in Kuwait.

By Wellington Dias.

In order to promote journalistic values and strengthen the professional
interests of local journalists in Kuwait, Senior Asian Journalists working in
the local media recently launched the Kuwait Asian Journalists Association
(KAJA) with the following office bearers:-

Javed Ahmad (from Kuwait Times) - President, Wajid Ali Wajid (from Arab Times)
- Vice President. Other office-bearers elected include Reaven D'Souza (Times)
Secretary General, Sanjeev Peter - Dy. Secretary General and Leslie D'souza as
Finance Secretary.

Five executive committee members namely Francis A. Clifford Cardozo, Peter
D'souza, Xavier Moraes, N.S. Das and Mohammad Omar were also elected.

The association is a grouping of Asian journalists from the sub-continent
(India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka) & Far East and is aimed at nurturing
interaction amongst its members, Arab and Western journalists. This is also the
first time that Asian journalists have come together under a common banner for
the collective welfare of its members.

The launch of KAJA was initiated after the sad & tragic demise of Alex
Fernandes, Senior Editor at the Kuwait Times.

The condolence meeting was held to commemorate & highlight Alex's immense
contribution to the local journalistic scene and got underway with a minute's
silence followed by eulogies by Reaven D'Souza, Xavier Moraes, Sajeev Peter,
Javed Ahmad, Peter D'Souza all of whom expressed shock & sadness at Alex's
sudden demise.

Condolences were expressed to Alex's Wife Doris and Son Melroy by all. KAJA's
President expressed support to Alex's family.

Above information provided by Clifford Cardozo of AT.

Alex's sudden demise after two decades of service at the Kuwait Times was tragic
and shocking for the entire journalist fraternity, his family members & friends
also.

Alex suffered a massive stroke while covering up the Chinchinim Club's Christmas
Tree function in December, 2003.

>From what I learn & is being given to understand, except for about five or so
people, not many people including the show organizers came forward to his aid to
revive him when he collapsed.

Wonder what the reasons really were, for not helping out.

Like the KAJA, I hope that many Indian/Goan - Clubs, Associations, Artistes,
dramatists in Kuwait whom Alex Fernandes used to give fantabulous publicity (for
their shows, performances, etc.), honour and pay tributes for his contribution
during their so proclaimed mega shows or otherwise.

Or is it too much to ask for and will he be a forgotten entity once everything
is said & done (by him) or should I say published ?

Rest in Peace dear Friend, sorry, I forgot to call you prior to my vacation.

It was good knowing you, thanks for everything, you'll be remembered.
