The truth of the matter, Mr. Bhatcar, is that both the Japanese and the Germans have a lot to be proud of. They are among the most powerful and prosperous nations of the world, and have risen to that status after having been destroyed in WW II. No small feat, I suppose. The problem sometimes is other peoples' sense of "inferiority", not their attitude. Yes, Hitler is still revered, by some (few) Germans. So what? At least their behaviour is closely watched by the authorities and anti-nazi laws are strictly enforced in Germany. I am far more worried about Advani and the RSS. His public utterances, warnings and threats are terrifying. The difference between Hitler and Advani is that the former had absolute power in his hands, the latter hasn't had it - yet. Both belong to the same category, and so do the Nazi party and the RSS.
Mr. Collaco, whatever your analogies, how can one compare Hitler and Nazis
with Advani and the RSS? I am no Advani/RSS supporter, but I feel that the Nazis
and Hitler cannot be compared to anybody. Hitler massacred millions of Jews
and the Japanese did it to the Chinese and the Koreans! The Israeli-Palestinian
conflict has been raging for decades. In Northern Ireland Catholics and Protestants
have been fighting for centuries. In Sudan, Nigeria, Algeria, Afghanistan, Iraq,
Sierra Leone -- almost every part of the world there is some religious strife.
Other than Saddam Hussein, I guess we only see comparisons of Advani with
Hitler! We are yet to find somebody to compare with Hitler for 1984 massacre
of Sikhs, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
You forgot to mention there is RSS in India, which hates Muslims and Christians. At this moment, there's a fair amount of anti-Muslim and anti-Christian sentiment in India, to the point of Muslims being massacred by the thousands (Gujarat), and Christian missionaries and followers being killed or persecuted or threatened.
When you mention Gujarat, you don't mention as to how it all started with the burning of the train. Gujarat has been a flashpoint for decades, with a lot of Hindu-Muslim riots. But, because a BJP government was in power, it got more press. The birth of India and Pakistan started with the violent Hindu-Muslim riots at partition. Unfortunately, nobody has been able to control them. Babri Masjid fiasco, coupled with bombings in Bombay, have not helped matters. Perhaps the religious divide has helped the politicians more than anybody else. Pakistani and ISI meddling has aggravated matters.
I find it amusing that we started with the subject of Japan and ended up with Hitler, Advani and the RSS!
Nagesh Bhatcar
