Call them Moiracars or the sardarjis of Bardez, the butt of jokes for centuries
in Goa. But one message sent out clearly by the voters in the recent Panchayat
by-election of Atafondem ward was that winnability or money power or party
affiliation was not important compared to honesty and a willingness to listen
and work for the betterment of the people. The voters of Moira situated near
Mapusa and famous for its banana's wanted to be henceforth remembered not as a
banana republic but one where people are empowered and citizens problems are
taken care of. The problems currently faced by the people in the village were
mainly garbage and illegal construction . In fact on the eve of the election
there was an active campaign by vested interests to try to frighten the voters
not to vote for Vizilia because illegal constructions would be demolished. In
the end however goodness won and Vizilia Hubert DeSa (122 votes) was returned
defeating her rivals Nirmal Chodankar (120) and Yamini Gaude (84). A humble
Vizilia said she faced an enormous responsibility but she would do her best and
her priorities would be

Rule of Law
Justice for All
Transparency
Empowerment of Women.
Cheers to the people of Moira!
