>From what I know of the case of Moir, the main village church is not on the exact spot, neither very close to the original spot. Very near the original spot was built a road-side cross, and quite close to it is the chapel of St. Sebastian. Curiously, when the Bl. Sacrament has to be removed from the Chuch, the tradition requires that it be kept in the Chapel of St. Sebastian On the same spot as the old main temple stood a huge banyan tree till very recently. The housing spree got rid of it some years ago.
The sites chosen to build the new churches were generally located on or close to river margins to (1) take advantage of river transport for building material; (2) to enable the religious superiors of the Orders, who controlled the parishes of Goa in the early centuries of conversion, to pay annual visits to the churches. It would be interesting to know from other village cases, if they "generally follow a similar pattern. Teotonio R. de Souza -------------- From: Sachin Phadte Subject: [Goanet]Church over Temple Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 23:12:33 -0800 ..asks whether the churches were built on the EXACT spot where the temples stood. I do not know for a fact, but it would seem obvious that if a temple was destroyed to build a church in its place, then the spot where the church would be built should be the EXACT spot. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
