On what Frederick wrote Frederick wrote: I broadly agree with the need to face up to inconvenient aspects of the past. At the same time, one has to be careful not to get caught up in traps that could be used in a situation where a religious polarisation is the main basis of fighting electoral battles in today's Goa.
Santosh's reply and Gilbert's response: GL: Thank you that my name has been extracted from the title to the post. SH: As far as I am concerned, one must mount a strong opposition to revisionist propaganda, but one can only do this credibly by demonstrating to everybody that that is what it is, by pointing out facts that refute it, and whenever possible, by educating people about settled positions held within the relevant branch of history. Gilbert's response: One can do so if given a chance. Every logical explanation is offered (within the Goa context) and the message is not refuted but the messenger. Now we have pious pronouncements on finding the truths. It started with St. Francis Xavier, and then with the Inquisition ad now the blanket statements of Churches built over temples. SH: Hindutva on the other hand is a virus that has afflicted modern Indian society. It has to be eliminated using all non-violent and honest means. Gilbert's response: Cheers, Please take this message to the appropriate audience or else we are preaching to the choir. Counter-acting Hindutva etc. can only be effectively done by moderate and intellectual Hindus. The main message being Hindus can progress without needing a crutch of another community or religion. Within the Goa context, build all the (destroyed) temples and more and may they be grander; without resorting to Catholic bashing. And this futile new discussion thread of 'forced conversion'. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for Goanet to [EMAIL PROTECTED] # # PLEASE remember to stay on-topic (related to Goa), and avoid top-posts # # More details on Goanet at http://joingoanet.shorturl.com/ # # Please keep your discussion/tone polite, to reflect respect to others # ##########################################################################
