When the Government of Goa, Daman and Diu won the bid to host All India Civil Services Football Tournament (AICSFT) in 1971, there was no stadium in Panaji. So, the then Chief Minister, late Dayanand Bandodkar, selected Campal as the venue and issued orders to build one on rush basis. The stadium was inaugurated with the introduction of the first AICSFT in Goa in October 1971. In all, 28 teams participated in the tournament, including one from Jammu & Kashmir. I worked in the Secretariat at the time and was one of the organizing committee members of the tournament. It is a pity that a 33-year old stadium has been demolished for the purpose of building a parking place for the ten-day film festival. It is indeed a shame to do so without thinking of an alternative site!!!

DEMOLITION OF CAMPAL STADIUM: Former chief minister Shashikala Kakodkar is filled with sadness that the Campal stadium, which was built by her father and Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar, has been demolished. "It is a sad thing," she commented. The government should have thought of an alternative before razing it or announced another site for locating the new football stadium. Agreeing that the location was an ideal one for football lovers, she opined that it is hardly possible to find another suitable site in the city with open spaces hard to come by. (WE-GT)

WILLY CRITICISES: The president of the State unit of Nationalist Congress Party and Saligao MLA, Dr Wilfred de Souza, criticized the destruction of the Dayanand Bandodkar Stadium at Campal by the government, for the purpose of building a parking place for the ten-day film festival. "It is impossible to understand why such a move was contemplated which gets rid of the only stadium that the city of Panjim can boast of, when there is an urgent need to have many more such stadiums in the city," Dr de Souza said.
