I generously referred to the GoaNet Admin Team as "Most Holy of Holies" and Fred translated this as "Big Bad Admin Team".

We all know Fred works odd hours being in the journalism/ editorial-consultancy line. I guess he was not thinking properly at 5.45 a.m.

Talking of Holy of Holies, I was particularly impressed by Viviana's recent posting describing GoaNet as a 'family list'. She further goes on to write "We are serious in our commitment that Goanet should be a place for all the members of your families".

However Viviana disappoints me by boiling down her restrictions to "We will not permit foul language or toilet jokes or jokes or posts which demean or objectify women."

Can this mean that ALL other postings and subjects are acceptable to a "family list"? Like the morally upright Indian Film Censor Board, let us not be obsessed with matters of sex and sexuality. There are other subjects that regularly pop up on GoaNet that are not suitable for young children - bigoted prejudices, descriptions of violence, religious and historical untruths, unauthenticated health warnings etc which could influence the juvenile, highly influenceable, GoaNetters.

Incidentally exactly how many GoaNetters are below 18? Are any records available? And how many parents on GoaNet encourage their minor children to subscribe and read GoaNet postings? And when exactly did this 'family list' thing creep in? It is not there in Hermans' Rules nor on the description of GoaNet which says

---- quote ---
Goanet is a general forum for people interested in Goa to meet and talk about Goa. Goanet, launched in 1994 by Herman Carneiro, is the first -- and trendsetting -- mailing list dealing with the region of Goa on the west coast of the Indian subcontinent. Members post news articles, opinion, humor (related to Goa), questions, etc., on this list.
---- unquote ---

Perhaps the GoaNet Admin Team could explain to us as to when they decided to make this a 'family list'.

Regardless, a big Thank You to the GoaNet Admin Team for protecting us, and our families, from the Big Bad World out there. I shudder to think that my children would grow up to be hardened career criminals after reading 'toilet jokes' and 'cursewords' on GoaNet.

Let us join hands with the Admin Team to make GoaNet a safe place where young children can be kept insulated from the Cruel World. Let us run it with proper discipline and authority, like any good Boarding School - or Nursery.

Goan adults wanting to discuss mature topics regarding Goa and Goans, without children being in earshot, can please find another list. We cannot afford to do this on our 'family list' which is teeming with impressionable Goan juveniles.

Cheers!

Cecil
