IFFI: FOUR-LANE ROAD HITS ENVIRONMENT BLOCK: Though construction of the
third Patto bridge has been approved by the Goa Coastal Zone Management
Authority, permission for the four-lane road between River Navigation
Department and the Secretariat has been withheld till an Environment Impact
Assessment is done through an expert agency. (WE-GT)
MIGHTY RESPONSE LEAVE CM DROOLING: Terming the response to his Mission
Salcete campaign in the minority-dominated areas as "absolutely fantastic",
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said the Congress leaders will see a
different voting pattern in the taluka this time. And, he sounded a note of
caution to the Congress, saying the Congress leaders would be under a wrong
impression if they think of a huge lead in Salcete." (H)
S GOA SET FOR CLOSE BJP-CONGRESS FIGHT: As in North Goa, so in the South,
the battle seems to be between the two main rivals-the Bharatiya Janata
Party and the Indian National Congress. Mr Ramakant Angle of the BJP and Mr
Churchill Alemao of the Congress are the main contestants for the South Goa
(Mormugao) parliamentary constituency vying for the votes of the around 5.10

SHIV SENA TO CONTEST BOTH SEATS: Despite sharing its Hindutva ideology and
being committed to supporting the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee,
the Shiv Sena on April 3 said it will field candidates in both the
parliamentary constituencies in Goa to oppose the BJP. The party named
advocate, Mr Sameer Bandodkar (North) and Mr Vishnu Prabhu (South) as

NAIK IS CPI CANDIDATE IN SOUTH: Mr Rajendra Datta Naik, the Communist Party
of India candidate for the South Goa parliamentary seat, filed his
nomination papers before the returning office and South Goa collector, Mr JB

SHOP BURGLED AT MAPUSA: Unknown culprits broke open the locks of "Isani's
Fantoos to wear", a shop selling readymade garments located in 'Cosmos
Centre' in the vicinity of the Municipal market in Mapusa and committed a
theft of goods worth Rs.26,000. (WE-GT)
ONE KILLED: A scooter rider, Shankar Datta Naik (52) of Porvorim, was killed
when he was knocked down by a motorcycle near Teen Building at about 12.20
pm on April 3. (H)
AT ROAD SAFETY MEET: The traffic police, transport department and the
government, in particular, were at the receiving end at the two-day Goa Road
Safety Conference that began in Panjim on April 3. Making a striking attack
on administration and governments-present and past regimes-Dr Nandkumar
Kamat, Project Scientist Goa University, said road-safety will not be a
reality in Goa unless it becomes an election issue. Since 1963-64 onward
till date about 6000 people have become "martyrs" on roads in Goa-many more
will continue to die or will be maimed, until road safety does not become
part of our culture, he said. (H)
PANJIM MARKET TENANTS ON CHAIN HUNGER STRIKE: Members of the Tenants Samiti
of the Panjim Municipal Market began a chain hunger strike on Saturday in
the corridors of the old Panjim market demanding immediate fulfillment of
their demands by the Corporation of the City of Panaji. (H)

Esteems stand parked in front of the Collectorate in Margao amidst the
Ambassadors and worn out government jeeps? The observers appointed by the
Election Commission are coming down here from Sunday and the election
authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure they enjoy a smooth

INJURED IN BLAST: An electrical engineer and three others were injured when
a transformer blasted in Pernem on April 2. The blast occurred due to short
circuit while the engineer and the three employees were repairing the

'CROSSES' LIGHT UP GOA VELHA: Mysterious images of crosses on the
windowpanes in at least four houses in Diasvaddo and Forgottem, Goa Velha,
stirred up curiosity and people were seen flocking to witness the
phenomenon. The first cross 'appeared' on the kitchen window of Rita
Cardozo, who noticed the images when light from a nearby streetlight flashed

EDUARDO ON YEMEN, SUDAN TOUR: Rajya Sabha MP Eduardo Faleiro will begin
today (April 4) a 10-day visit to Yemen and Sudan at the invitation of the
World Bank. Faleiro will represent India at a conclave of eight senior
parliamentarians from major countries of the world. The purpose of the visit
is to review the activities of the World Bank in that region and make
appropriate recommendations to the World Bank and the national government on
how better to involve parliamentarians in their decision-making process.
