It is surprising that though 14th April, the birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar the champion of social eqaulity and architect of the Indian Constitution was a national public holiday, it was not one in Goa as the Government that brags of Good governance failed to notify it.
The Chief Minister is reportedly to have said that the holiday could not be notified in view of the model code of conduct in force due to the elections. Is the model code of conduct applicable only in Goa? A lousy justification but not surprising in view of the fact that the Chief Minister last year even unsuccessfully attempted to do away with the Oct 2nd Gandhi Jayanti day as a public holiday in utter disrespect to the Father of our nation the late Mahatma Gandhi.. And with elections round the corner is it the right time to carry out any illegal construction, if you please? Now you do not have to hurriedly do it over the week-end as all the authorities are presumably pre-occupied with election duty. And the Sarpanch and the councillors would turn a blind eye if you assure the party of their choice your precious vote. So it is the right time to expand your balcao, enlarge your backyard and encroach on whichever land possible. And the candidates may even sponsor your expenses if you could assure them a sizeable number of votes. Politics and elections are today no longer a mission but a business venture with high stakes in place.
