I hope the above does not come as a surprize to anyone. In the USA, it has taken on
new corrupt
heights (Halliburton, the Texan oil mafia, big oil and fictitious WMDs), a scam that
Goan
politicians can only dream of.
On the bright side, democracies allow various interests groups (and who isn't a
special interest
group these days?), to be actively involved in the system and have their values
recognized through
the legal and legislative system. We need to first understand this and then take
advantage of
this opportunity.
The comments I have read on political involment recently on this forum (Gilbert
Menezes, Valmiki,
Jorge) and previously (Floriano, Fred) regarding either boycotting a election or
checking off
"None of the above" on the ballot, strike me as defeatist at best, lazy at worst. Why
not run for
political office or support someone who shares your values? A functioning democracy
requires
every citizen to be involved in the political process and share the political burden
(not merely
criticize others), otherwise:
1. someone else is deciding what is good for you,
2. they are promoting their own agenda - at your expense, and
3. your values exist for you without being tested at the ballot box.
Regards,
George
P.S. If Aires is reading this email, keep up the good work. As a political gadfly (I
say this
with respect and in a complimentary way), you have a role to play, similar to Floriano
and some
NGO's. Every society, including Goan society, needs more people like you.
