A galaxy of India's stars arrived in Canacona for a function on Wednesday and the event had nothing to do with the Lok Sabha elections. Politicians, business tycoons, media barons, medical specialists, fashion gurus and sportstars came to attend the wedding of Raghu Marwah and Shradda Suri, daughter of Lalit Suri, Chairman and Managing Director of The Grand Group, The Grand Inter Continental Resort at Canacona.
Shradda, who owns the Subros firm in New Delhi, married Raghu Marwah, a chartered accountant, at Canacona on Wednesday evening. The wedding was held in the traditional Punjabi wedding style, while the entertainment was provided by the Vyas brothers, well known musicians from Kolkata.
The guest list comprising the cream of Indian society began arriving in the State early this week and are reported to have taken part in the different wedding rituals that took place during the last couple of days.
Politicians like Arun Jaitley and Vinod Khana, who also made some appearance at a BJP political rally, were reportedly having a gala time and left last evening by a special Reliance group aircraft.
Anil Ambani, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries Ltd, and Chairman, BSES Ltd, wife of Amitabh Bachan, Jaya Bachan and SP leader Amar Singh arrived a day before and left by a late night special flight. Sahara TV's and Air Sahara chief Subroto Roy also made his appearance at the wedding and left later during the night by his personal aircraft.
The big guests arrived in special charter aircrafts flown from Mumbai and Delhi and some of the high profile guests were transported by a special helicopters that flew from the The Grand InterContinental Resort in Canacona to the Dabolim airport.
A couple of charter flights from New Delhi and Mumbai made special landings with the high profile guests. Some of the Goa-Mumbai flights were also directly flown to Delhi with the guests.
Editor of Punjab Kesri, Ashwani Kumar Chopra who is provided with special Z category security due to terrorist threats was also spotted out while being closely surrounded by his Black Cat commandos.
Steel baron Laxmi Mittal arrived early this week for the big wedding and left on April 14. The steel baron, the richest Indian outside India, Mittal now lives in North London. Ispat has plants in Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Germany, Ireland and the US. He also has private steel interests in Kazakhstan and Indonesia. He also has interests in cable television and launched one of the most popular Asian channels, B4U in the UK.
Leading journalist Prabhu Chawla, editorial director of the India Today group and recipient of the Padma Bhushan early this month was also a known face among the long list. Chawla, considered as one of India's finest political journalists and known for his sharp political analysis and investigative reports, left on Thursday afternoon.
Another famed journalist from New Delhi, Star news person Rajat Sharma formerly with the Star News top-rated Aaj Ki Baat was also present for the wedding.
According to Anjali Chaterjee, GM marketing promotion, there were around 600 plus guests from New Delhi, Mumbai other parts of the country and also overseas who attended the wedding.
She further informed that Governor of Goa Kidar Nath Sahai and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar also graced the function.
Others who were present included renowned open heart surgery specialist Dr Naresh Trehan from New Delhi, brother of Air Sahara chief J B Roy, Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways, Adi Godrej, Chairman of Godrej Foods, Godrej Sara Lee, Godrej Pillsbury, Godrej Agrovet, Godrej Photo-Me and Godrej Properties, Cricket legend Kapil Dev and designer Rohit Bal. --------------------------------- HERALD 16/4/04 page 1 ---------------------------------
