From: Cecil Pinto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Not my suggestion, Cecil. And I don't think Mel Gibson is either naive or a dunce in matters financial.

CP Merwyn it is always a pleasure to discuss matters with you. I am not a spokesman for Hollywood or for anyone for that matter.
If indeed your statement, that the only aim of producers is to make money, is true then isn't the Church playing into their hands by encouraging people to see "Passion of Christ". Also it goes against Alfred Tavares' suggestion that Mel Gibson has given permission for the movie to be screened by churches for some altruistic reasons. Either Gibson wants to make money or he wants people to see it free. Or does he want everyone to see a bad print/screening free in the Church so that they will then pay money to see a good print in a theatre?
Is this all one big promotion gimmick in which the Church is unwittingly assisting?
He was being questioned by a very respected, and knowlegeable, film-critic, long close to cinema giants like Bergman, Sucksdorff and such, and cognizant with the intricacies involved in floating an independent film-production especially in confrontation with massed Hollywood tycoons.
Precedents show how they can ostracize and liquidate those opposing them so blatantly. They still have such clout.
But so does Vatican; and I have reasons to believe, after the conversation I listened to that it contributed to smoothening the intrepid Mel's path. Investment also might have featured. The project cost a stupendous deal and he must have raised it without punishing his own pocket so drastically.
And, can we even assume to guess in what enterprises, worldwide, the Banco Ambrosiano invests in?
Alfred de Tavares, Stockholm, 2004-04-22
Rico, I will fail your request this time. In fact I intend to use it as a chapter in the book I mentioned yesterday. But you can use it in advance. Will send next week.
