It's the theological generation gap.  There are
fashion trends in theology as in other things - I was
brought up on brimstone and hellfire!  
Your nuns must not have heard that from Pope Leo
onward, Papal encyclicals have defined work as a
positive thing largely due to the rise of the worker,
socialist, and communist movements, not a punishment. 
Wonder whether you sleep on the job to avoid the
"punishment"?!
