It is even more uncommon to find the volley of allegations being credited to a minister.
Agriculture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar created a ruckus at the Mapusa police station on Sunday night, accusing the police on duty of functioning like terrorists and being most inefficient.Mandrekar barged into the Mapusa police station at about 9.30 pm and accused the police of being thieves, looters and extortionists, while giving vent to his rage at the men in uniform.
The minister even went to the extent of saying that the people of Goa are
living in a goonda-raj, till one journalist intervened and informed the minister
that he is part of of the ruling BJP government in the State. The minister had
come to the police station to seek an explanation from Mapusa police as
to why they were taking his instructions lightly.
Mandrekar was heard complaining that on May 1 when he was attending a public function at Verla-Canca, he had complained to to Mapusa police via his mobile phone, that somebody was threatening his worker. The minister claimed that despite his instructions, the police did not come to the site, thereby exhibiting its indiscipline towards a minister.
The police while refuting the minister's allegations, claimed that the Mapusa police had arrested two persons under Section 151 CrPC. The police added that the minister had come to seek the release of one of the accused, who happened to be his supporter.
The men in uniform who appeared disturbed over the minister's bahaviour, said they exhibited sheer patience over the nuisance created by the minister at the police station. ----------------------------------- HERALD 4/5/04 page 1 ----------------------------------
