TENSION STILL PREVAILS AT SANGUEM: Tension over the death of Sameer Naik allegedly due to negligence of the staff on duty at the PHC, Sanguem, continued to prevail for the second day. A huge mob gathered at the Sanguem bus stand at 7 pm protesting against the death of 30-year-old Sameer Naik. At around 8.30 am, Sanguem police arrested two agitators - Edwin Mascarenhas and Kaushik Sangekar. (GT) BANDH IN SANGUEM: Closure of shops and business establishments, burning of two effigies, two arrests and slogans against Sanguem MLA Vassudev Meng Gaonkar at a public meeting, marked the Sanguem bandh on September 29.The agitation was temporarily called off at about 5 pm, after the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar assured to look into the grievances of the agitating residents. (H) 30 BITS STUDENTS AFFECTED BY GASTROENTERITIS: Nearly 30 students of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, at Zuarinagar, have been affected by gastroenteritis. Though the exact cause of the affliction was not immediately known, it is suspected that the students consumed water and food outside the campus canteen. BITS director TC Goel told Gomantak Times that the management had taken enough remedial measures even when it had one of the best in-house hygienic conditions. (GT) 'SCRAP GOA CHILDREN'S ACT': Congress Legislature Party spokesman Jitendra Deshprabhu said the Goa Children's Act was riddled with so many loopholes that it could not provide for the security and welfare of minor and children in Goa. He said the present Act needs to be scrapped as it has failed to protect the children's interests and to put the culprits behind bars. (GT) WATER SPORTS SITES TO BE DEMARCATED: Six sites along the beach will be demarcated by the government for water sports activities soon. Sources said these will be in Sinquerim, Candolim and Calangute in North Goa and Colva, Majorda and Cavelossin in South Goa. Henceforth, tourism-related waters ports activities would be allowed only from these six areas along the beach earmarked for the purpose, an official source said. (H) FORGED CERTIFICATE: One Jerry Teles, an officer of Indian Oil Corporation, Dabolim, has lodged a complaint with Vasco police that one Rajendra Harmalkar, an employee of the Corporation, has produced a forged SSC certificate from a Karnataka education institution to secure employment. (GT) ERRING PRIVATE BUS OPERATORS: The Borda Citizens Welfare Committee has urged the government to crack a whip on private bus operators for violation of traffic rules with impunity. In a press note, the Committee lamented that the private bus operators take the rules for granted and also go unpunished. (H) ARRESTED FOR HIGHWAY ROBBERY: Mapusa police on September 29 arrested the five accused allegedly involved in the highway robbery reported on 24 September near Colvale. One of the accused is still at large. (GT) REPORT ON SKYBUS ACCIDENT: The four-member committee appointed by the Konkan Railway Corporation will submit on 1st October its report on the Skybus accident that took place on Saturday, KRC managing director B Rajaram said in Margao on September 29. (GT) 'COMMERCIALISATION OF POLITICS': GPCC president, Luizinho Faleiro, has called upon the voters of Poinguinim to vote against the commercialisation of politics that has set in Goa in the recent past, saying that vote is a sacred right that should not be frittered away for narrow considerations of money and alcohol. He was addressing a meeting at Talpona in the Ponguinim c onstituency. (H) BAN ON ARMS IN CANACONA TALUKA: The South Goa district magistrate, Mr JB Singh, issued an order on September 29, imposing a ban in Canacona taluka for carrying all types of arms and firearms and other lethal weapons, to ensure free, fair, peaceful and orderly conduct of by-election process in Poinguinim assembly constituency. (NT) MMC CHAIRPERSON BARRETO RESIGNS: The MC chairperson Milton Barreto tendered his resignation from his post on 28 September. In his one line resignation letter Barreto said, "Instability in decision making of the Council has compelled me to resign from the post of the Chairperson." (GT) COMMON CATTLE POUND: The village Panchayats of Assolna, Ambelim and Velim, have decided to experiment a novel idea to tackle the growing problem of stray cattle menace. Instead of setting up one pound each in their respective villages, these panchayats have agreed to set up a common cattle pound at an easily accessible place. (H) CLUB HOUSE FACILITY IN MAPUSA: The Mapusa Active Citizens' Union has once again stepped in to open a 'Club House' for the residents and the youth of Mapusa. The Club House will be inaugurated on October 3 at 7 pm, opposite Children's Park, Altinho, and will house a gym, indoor games room, internet and computer games, a library, health food restaurant and juice bar, a photo art gallery and a safe playing area for children. (H) LOCALS OPPOSE MOBILE TOWER AT BENAULIM: Opposition against erection of mobile towers seems to be spreading to other parts of Salcete as well. After Navelim, Cuncolim, Maddel and Curtorim, residents of Benaulim have lodged their strong objection to the erection of a mobile tower at Mazilvaddo in a residential locality. In a signed memorandum addressed to the Benaulim panchayat, the residents demanded that the panchayat body seek immediate clarification from the Goa government as well as the Union Ministry of Environment in the matter of pollution caused due to harmful radiation of mobile towers. (H) IFFI PANEL FINALISES PLANS: The Coordination Committee of the International Film Festival of India has finalized detailed arrangements for accommodation, transport security and other programmes for the festival.The meeting felt that over 3000 delegates are expected to attend the 10-day IFFI beginning on November 29. The IFFI camp office will be operational from November 1 at old GMC building at Campal. The meeting also decided to pedestrianise the entire IFFI area from Kala Academy to the old GMC complex. (NT) PATHWAY IN CARMONA: After around four years since it was blocked for the public, the Executive Magistrate, Salcete, on September 28 opened a public pathway at Choquivaddo in Carmona village. (H) TALPONA BRIDGE: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said on September 29 that the Talpona-Galgibaga bridge will be completed along with other 27 bridges, within two years. Mr Parrikar was addressing the locals of Gaodongri at a corner meeting (held in connection with the Poinguinim bye-election_. (NT) FR ANTIMO TAKES OVER AS DSE CHIEF: Fr Jose Santana Antimo Gomes, known as Fr Antimo Gomes, has been appointed President of Diocesan Society of Education by the Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao. Fr Gomes, who is currently the Parish Priest of Panjim Church, will hold the new post as an additional charge. He has been associated with DSE - The Goa Church body which runs over hundred schools, colleges and other educations institutions. (H) DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI MEET: The process of reviving the Dalgado Konknni Akademi catering to Konkani writers of the roman script, is already gaining momentum. There will be a meeting of the members and wellwishers of the Akademi, on October 2, at 3.30 pm, at the TB Cunha Hall in Panjim. The main item for discussion would be on the draft of the Dalgado Konknni Akademy's constitution besides other relevant/important topics. (GT) GFA, AIFF SIGN MOU WITH UNIVERSITY OF PORTO: The Goa Football Association and All India Football Federation have signed a MoU with Portugal's famed Universidade do Porto (University of Porto) for developing football at grass root level in the State. As part of the MoU, three coaches and a Portuguese delegation will visit Goa in February. The MoU is mainly aimed at improving Goa's youth development programme and helping the game progress at the grass root level, according to GFA secretary Savio Messias, at present in Portugal.
