The number of councilors to be elected under the Act has now been decreased from 50 to 30. The company will operate a series of charter flights from Russia to Goa between October and May with 180 passengers each week, totaling to more than 5,000 visitors from Russia in the coming season. The company has tied up with Le Passage to India for the service and Le Passage would also sell optional tours to the Russian tourists to visit other parts of the country. The charter market to Goa in terms of foreign exchange earnings is estimated at Rs.1,500 crore in the last two financial years. (NT) GONE GOA? According to reliable sources, the Goa Tourism stall at Otdykh Leisure travel mart at Moscow, earlier this month, was virtually captured by some Russian travel agents who were marketing destinations such as Kerala, the Golden Triangle, Nepal, Turkey, Bali, Thailand and the Emirates, besides Goa.However, deputy director of tourism, Pamela Mascarenhas, who headed the delegation to Moscow, denied the allegations. She did not deny the above mentioned facts though. (GT) TWO ARRESTED: Maina-Curtorim police arrested two persons, Floriano Fernandes and Carmo Fernandes, both residents of Curtorim, for allegedly assaulting one Alberto Rebello with a "koita" on September 29 night. (H) QUEPEM YOUTH ARRESTED FOR APING A GIRL: The Quepem police arrested 29-year-old Vikram Gaunkar, working at a stone quarry at Malocpon-Malkarnem, for allegedly raping a 22-year-old girl from Malkernem. (NT) FILM PRINT WARD: A Film Print Ward will be set up in the Old Goa Medical College Campal premises and guarded round the clock in view of the International Film Festival of India Goa 2004.The national and international prints of films, which will be screened during the film festival between 29 November and 10 December, will be kept under tight security to rule out piracy of films. (GT) DIRECTIVE ON BEACH SAFETY: The Delhi High Court directive to the Centre to co-ordinate with the states to provide safety to the people visiting the "killer beaches". Is timely considering the spate of deaths due to drowning of the tourists at Goa beaches during recent years. The Court has also enjoined upon the Union ministries of culture, tourism and environment to work out plans to safeguard the lives of "innocent tourists visiting inherently dangerous beaches". (Edit in GT) INDIA LOSING OUT TO VIETNAM IN CASHEWS: Concerned at India facing the grave danger of losing its tag of the world's largest cashew exporter to Vietnam's rapidly growing industry, Indian cashew manufacturers have called for a concerted effort to increase production and improve standards. Disclosing this to reporters, the Cashew Export Promotion Council chairman, Mr Bharatan Pillai said, "Although India exports a total of 1.10 lakh tonne of cashew kernels per year, its position is under grave threat as Vietnam is fast catching up in terms of both price and volume of its product." Mr Pillai is in Goa to attend the two-Indian Cashew Convention 04 to be held from October 3. He stated, "Currently India produces a total of 4.5 lakh tonne of raw cashew every year and an additional 4.50 lakh tonne is imported, yielding a finished product of 2 lakh cashew kernels. Out of this 1.10 lakh is exported while the remaining 90,000 is consumed domestically. (H) TO OPTIMISE USE OF BAMBOO: Scientists from South Asian countries, including India, discussed means to evolve a network and optimize use of the vast bamboo resources, particularly in fisheries, at a two-day international policy workshop on "Bamboo in Fisheries" held at National Institute of Oceanography. Dr SZ Quasim, vice chairperson of Society for Indian Ocean Studies, said a great deal of lifestyle in the future will depend on bamboo and more importantly because it is environment-friendly and its cultivation can generate a lot of employment to a large number of people, specially women. (GT) PHD FOR CARMEL LECTURER: Goa University has awarded PhD degree in Physics to Mr JBC Efrem de Sa, Selection Grade Lecturer, Department of Physics, Carmel College, Nuvem, for his thesis "Study of Electrical and Magnetic Properties of NiAs Type Transition Metal Chalcogenides". Mr Efrem is the son of late Mr Francisco de Sa and Mrs Lia de Sa. (H) PROF NEWMAN IN NATIONAL MINORITY EDUCATION PANEL: Principal of St Xavier's College, Prof Newman Fernandes, has been appointed member of the National Monitoring Committee for Minority Education. Besides monitoring the implementation of Minorities Education in the Programme of Action prepared by the Central Government in 1992, this Committee will recommend issues related to reservation, recognition and evaluation of minority institutions. Prof Newman Fernandes was transferred to St Xavier's College in October, 2002, and since then, he has worked persistently along with his team to raise the status of St Xavier's College from "one of the best colleges in Goa" to "one of the best colleges in India". He piloted the project of "College with Potential for Excellence" and St Xavier's College was conferred this status earlier this month and was adjudged as one of the 47 Best Colleges in India, of the entire population of 16,000 colleges.
