Just back from a brief trip to Goa. The focus of Goa is on Poiginuim, and it seems voters are having a gala time getting goodies from both sides. The going rate seems to be that a scooter is gifted for every thirty votes! I hope the Poingincars are smart enough to receive things from both sides and finally speak their mind on the voting day. Doctors have gone on strike today for a day and took out a morcha today because of the Sanguem incident. The doctors claim that there was no negligence, while the Sanguem public thinks otherwise. Rest, Goa is as usual the susegad place that it is. Didnt have a chance to do a first hand inquiry about the Sky bus. What I heard was that the sky bus route takes a lot of space on the ground that one wonders why the sky bus is at such a high altitude. With the ground space taken, one might as well have a proper bus going on the ground instead. Also, I read in one newspaper that the Konkan Railway director has said that it is quite usual that accidents will happen and lives will be lost. He did not have any regret for Babu's death or didnt think it was something wrong. In fact, he thought that it is part of the regular course of things. So, I am now getting convinced that my sarcastic statement about population control migh be actually coming true! Also, I didnt have a chance to notice it, but it seems that the Goan Observer has reported that Anil Salgoancar was arrested in China for 15 days. It seems he did not supply the ore to the Chinese as per the contract. Btw, there is too much truck traffic on the ghats now, as China wants some quite low quality ore (basically they want the earth which has a pretty low percentage of ore in it) which is available in the ghats. So, Anil Salgaonkar is paying truckers left and right to ferry just earth from the ghats to Usgao. With the Kadamba Interstate Transport being erratic, I took KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) this time to go to Goa, and it got delayed as a tire got punctured. They fixed it and we reached Ponda by 11 am. The bus had started Bangalore at 5 pm the earlier day. Just as I was cursing KSRTC, we saw the Bangalore-Margao Kadamba broken down in the ghat section (the time was 10 am or so), and all passengers were waving at our bus and asking it to stop. The difference between Kadamba and KSRTC is that even though both the buses regularly breakdown the KSRTC guys repair it, while the Kadamba guys abandon their bus leaving the passengers to their own. I felt good that I have stuck to my decision of not travelling by Kadamba on the Interstate route. regards, Samir Kelekar Bangalore
