Dear R.T.O Inspector Cecil Savio Pinto, I will not reply to your list of questions " a) What does a broken white line with a continuos white line alongside in the center of the road signify? b) What is the difference between single and double yellow lines on the road? c) What would be the correct distance to keep from the car ahead of you when that vehicle is moving at 45 kmph? d) Within how many meters of a bus stop is parking allowed. 2) When your scooter is stopped by the cops and you are asked for the bike Registration papers, which you don't have, should you: a) Slip the cop a 20 rupee note b) Slip the cop a 50 rupee note c) Slip the cop a coy embarrassed smile and pout like an about-to-be-punished school girl d) Mention that your brother-in-law's cousin is a Deputy Collector. ---------- because Ive already been quizzed when I took my driving test, I dont ride a bike, and I always have my car registration papers handy. I think the Goanet reader article "Safe riders, women score better on roads" says it all. Fred N has brought up a very interesting point : "The problem with Goa is that women have done a lot for themselves in the past generation. They've overcome many a handicap. Not primarily because men here are more liberal and tolerant, but simply because of the additional responsiblities brought on by migrating menfolk, by women being absorbed in the workforce, and similar factors. But, at the same time, they're stuck with an extremely conservative and backward-looking attitudes coming from society in general, and menfolk in particular. FN__________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ The no of women drivers on the roads in Goa has increased considerably. The men are on cruise liners, or working in the gulf, abroad,so women are forced to shoulder responsibilties, driving included. I think Goan women need to be encouraged and applauded. Not only are they doing a swell job of driving, managing the home and the hearth but they motivate the men folk. If you look around,it is the females who go to college, pursue careers ,while many goan males are content to be "bhatcars",many are high school dropouts. Many Goan males highest ambition is to join a cruise liner. (Male goanetters, this doesnt apply to you.)The reality is that the average goan male in villages lacks motivation, women by far seem a spunkier lot. Sorry to go off the topic of driving,I just wanted to say something in defense of Goan Women.Goan women's attitudes have changed/are changing in a positive way. ____________________________________________________________________________ __ So Cecil, women may or may not know how to change airfilters ,tyres etc but they sure know how to make the men feel important. They give the men these trivial jobs,so that they can feel "macho" and "superior" and gloat over how indispensable they are. Cheers, Melinda Coutinho Powell
