A correspondent of mine from the Gulf, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent this to me in reply to my query on Sausage consumption patterns. I doubt the veracity of his statements as he is not a Goan by origin and might have been exaggerating and pulling my leg. Could some Gulf Goans please let me know if the statements below are relatively accurate or just figments of his imagination:

------------

the baggage allowance inbound (Dubai) is 20 Kgs.
People often end up coming with 40-50 kgs (some
leaking bags u should note on the conveyor belt (poor
Bengalis have to clip their nose as they are not used
to these vinegar based preparations)

I can roughly give you a guideline(sausages only)
based on the survey with 10 Goan friends who travel
every year to Goa. Except one person all others had
sausages in their baggage. A listing of other items

The sausages only averaged to 5-7 kgs.

So curious enough I asked what the other 15 kgs (plus
10-12 in the cabin luggage) contained and some of the
listed facts were here:
Initially I wanted to seek your help for the
Konkani words for this stuff but since HINGLISH is the
common language here I thought you too would understand.

Cheuris 5 - 7 kgs
Maadachem Godd (Goan Jaggery?) 2-3kgs
Dukraa Maas (Pork Roasted) 2-3 kgs
Sorpotel- 2-3 kgs
Raw (frozen) pigling 5 kgs
Reichead - 1 jar (1kg)
Amot Tik - 1 jar (1-2 kg)
Miskoot (pickles) Tendli/Mango
Balchao/Mole - 1 jar 1/2 kg approx
Sollam
Tamarind
Kashmiri Chillies
Vinegar - 2-3 ltrs
Ground Masala (Xacuti/ Sambar/ Fish Curry)1-2 kgs
Kiraitem (bitter medicine)
Banana Chips 1 kg
Bolingaas (small roundbiscuits)1 kg
Doss (coconut and chana) plates (1kg each)
Bibik 1-2 kgs
Dodol approx 2 kgs ( 1 kg if simonia's)
Sanna's (on the Friday flight) with fresh Sorpotel
Pinaag 1 kg
Cashew Seeds (roasted/salted/non roasted) 2-3 kgs
Wine Sachets 10 pieces (non spillable)
Mangoes (seasonal)3-4 kgs

I also know of a friend who brought pato-eos (cant spell) those with rice & coconut fillings Another friend I remember brought freshly fried BANGDAAS (rechead) about 15-20 packed in banana leaves and then silver foil.

All this requires the Alluminium foil and the brown
packing tape (which the Gulfees would carry) but now
available in Mapusa and Margao.

Feni/ Uraak/ Royal Stag is out as there are scanners near
to where the customs officers are so everything goes
checked they hardly bother about the quantity of PORK you
carry in whichever form but if you got a bottle
showing in the SCAN then all other stuff along with it
is gone...
one of my friends mother even brought the grinding
stone...they call it...gunn sunno or something...

---------

The identity of my correspondent is not important. What I am trying to do is verify the authenticity of his list.

Awaiting some feedback from Gulf Goans so I can provide a database here for people interested in the Goa-to-Gulf Export business.
