There is a lot of coverage of low cost airfares in the rest of the world and now even in India. But when one gets down to brass tacks there is just a line or two on bargain fares FROM Goa on domestic flights. By contrast I came across a link on air fares including budget fares on a number of sectors connecting Kochi. No prizes for guessing who is going to get ahead in the domestic tourist sweepstakes. Regarding the rediff piece I had several problems with it. In the first place it didnt mention the names of the "selected" world airlines with which Indian fares were compared. Were they only domestic carriers as they should be or did they include some international carriers as well. Note that Easyjet and Ryanair of Europe may be "international" carriers by our standards! Next, the title of the article is about high Indian air fares but the text is practically all about high Indian fuel costs. And, last but not least, the discussion is not an easy read. The crux of the problem, in my opinion is that Indian policy makers continue to let people think of air travel as a luxury to be taxed heavily rather than a necessity (given the distances to be covered) to be aided and faciltitated actively. Railways and roads get more priority than airports and aircraft and will probably continue to do so unless the policymakers switch mental gears.
