This is the first time that moral values have become the most important issue in an election. 35% of Bush's total vote can be attributed to this issue, as opposed to only 8% of Kerry's vote. Among the 78% of voters for whom moral values were not the most important issue, Kerry won by landslide - a huge margin of 14% (52% Kerry, 38% Bush). Terrorism was the third most important issue when it should have been the first, knowing what is going on in the world today. Moral values were not even a marginal issue in the last election. That they became an issue at all on election day this time defies all reason. The only way one can explain it is that for some twisted reason religious moralists came out in force to express their faith that Bush is going to keep gays from getting married to each other.
