> Since many goans were students of the Lyceum and for > even to those who were > not, the Lyceum is an academic and emotional point > of reference, Lyceum was one place that I do remember with nostalgia and a bit of trepidation, though I never studied there. It was the place I answered most of my final exams (SSC through to Intermediate Science. A bit of nostalgia because firstly I remember the place being brightly lit for festivals (it was situated at a high level behind my house) and the like; secondly because it was a visible landmark to Panjim when approaching the city from Patto or from aboard the steamer coming in from what was known in those days as Bombay. It was also the scene for the mock "battles" between rival groups at carnival, throwing "cocotes" at one another, some protected by cardboard "shields". Alas, it has gone, almost gone, I have with me a few photographs of sad, dilapidated buildings (with the exzception of the buildings converted for Court use). The quadrangle has been shut off. The windows are broken, some hanging off their hinges. There are no tiles in places. If only an imaginative govt could revive the ancient halls and use them as convention / IFFI venues ... Gabriel.
