The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) at an emergency meeting held at Margao yesterday thanked Goa Governor S.C. Jamir for his intervention on the helmet issue and resolved to suspend the protest demonstrations which were scheduled to commence at the venue of IFFI from November 29 inview of the assurance by Governor Jamir that the police would be directed to immediately stop harassment of two-wheeler riders. The meeting also appreciated the assurance by Governor Jamir that he would request the high level committee appointed by the Government under the Chairmanship of Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar to expedite its study and findings on the helmet issue. The meeting expressed confidence that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar who were sympathetic to the practical difficulties being faced by two wheeler riders as regards to helmets would find a comprehensive solution to the helmet issue. MAG would work closely with Police and Transport department officials to ensure that there is a sincere crackdown on reckless, negligent and drunken driving which would drastically bring down the alarming rate of accidents in Goa.
