On the Internet, one thing (link?) leads to the other. If curiosity earlier took me to soc.history.what-if then the latter took me to Esperanto. Most Goanetters would have probably heard of this 'planned' (not 'artificial') language created to promote global communication.
One month or two ago, Goa Today carried an article by Dr Olivinho Gomes, about his experiences in China, while participating in an international Esperanto meet, which he got roped into by a neighbour at Dona Paula.
It was a pleasant surprise to find that there are networks which offer free e-mail lessons in Esperanto. See, for instance, http://www.esperanto-usa.org/lessons.html
Given that Esperanto has its roots largely in the Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages (that's what some of its English-oriented critics say), it should make it fairly easy for people from Goa to cope with. Those like Alfred Tavares in Sweden would probably find it a cake-walk!
Question: did anyone out there try out Esperanto anytime?
With the Net around, it's possible to easily dig up information on such international issues. Thankfully, curiosity doesn't always kill the cat. Currently I'm looking out for resources on how to teach a young kid to read -- the Literacy Volunteers of America and George Washington University offer an early find of online resources.
