NT Staff Reporter

Panaji Oct 30: Launching a drive for the elimination of Filaria in Goa, the
government will start its door-to-door campaign of 'Mass Drug Administration
' from November 1, 2004. This programme of the central government is being
undertaken in Goa by the Vector Bone Diseases Control Programme Cell and
expects to cover a population of about 10,420,086 people all over Goa.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Dr Deepak Kabadi of the Cell said
that in the first phase of the programme in June this year, it had been
tried in four Goan urban towns of Panaji, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa as well
as the village of Cumbarjua and a population coverage of 80 per cent
achieved.

Dr Kabadi said there are 83 chronic cases and 20 asymptomatic carriers of
Filaria in Goa. The drug, Diethyl Carbamazine Citrate, needs to be taken
once a year for five years to obtain immunity from Filaria. The Cell has
also enlisted the help of anganwaddi teachers in the programme that will
administer the drug to all persons above the age of two years except
pregnant ladies and very sick persons.

The drug is to be taken on a full stomach. Dr Kabadi said the Central
government has set 2050 as the target year by which Filaria will be
eliminated from the country.
