REDDY: GOA NOT YET PERMANENT ABODE OF IFFI: Union Minister for Information
and Broadcasting S Jaipal Reddy said on December 1 that a final decision on
Goa as a permanent venue for International Film Festival of India would be
taken only after studying the experiences of the ongoing 35th IFFI event. He
said that the Central government had entered into the Memorandum of
Understanding with the Goa government for one year. He made it clear that
all political parties from Goa were unanimous in demanding that Goa be made
the permanent venue for IFFI. "There is no politics involved in the
decision. IFFI is our country's pride and we will take a decision which is
in the interest of the film industry," the minister said. (GT)

LACK OF PUBLICITY: Alexander de Grunwald, former Production Manager with
Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi", has been at the IFFI from day one. He has
attended festivals the world over including the FICCI Frames Conference of
India and is currently India representative for Film Finances Inc and the
media consultant for ImpactIndia Foundation.But at the IFFI in Goa, he has
yet to obtain his delegate's pass like so many other film professionals.
Registration is now closed, says a board. But de Grunwald says he hopes he
would get a pass. About the IFFI in Goa, he says, "The big surprise to me is
the lack of publicity or hype about the IFFI. Other delegates may arrive
later in the week, but certainly judging by the opening ceremonies, there
does seem to be a lack of foreign delegates and it begs the question as to
who this Festival is aimed at." (GT's IFFI supplement)

CLEARING THE HURDLES: The 35th International Film festival of India seems to
be making an impact on the city of Panaji with the waterfront from the
market to Miramar looking like another world, even more beautiful at
night.Ms Ruby Das, An Assamese delegate was critical of the arrangements and
the inconvenience caused to the delegates.This morning the rear lights were
on at the Kala Academy five minutes after the film started.the
projectionists at the INOX at times have trouble focusing on the
screen.Hyderabad filmmaker, Mr AVS Adinarayan complained about the rudeness
of the Goan staff who just brushed off well-known film personalities. "It is
bad hospitality," he said. No, he thought Goa was right for IFFI but the

HOLLYWOOD HAS LOST ITS HEART: Victoria Page, who danced with Elvis in a
movie, and Lawrence David Foldes, who got his first kicks through his movie
Malibu High at the age of 18, are partners at work and in life. They will
feature in the critically acclaimed movie, Finding Home, at the 35th
International Film Festival of India. The Goa bug has already bitten them.
"We see and feel the passion that film makers and film lovers have. This is
so fresh and nice. We are thrilled to be here," they said in unison. (Reuven

KONKANI PROGRAMMES ON AIR, DD TO GET A BOOST: S Jaipal Reddy said that a new
transponder would be provided to facilitate greater programme generation  on
Panaji Doordarshan Kendra and the All India Radio (AIR) in Konkani, which he
said, was not only the local dialect of Goa but also spoken in the border
areas of Goa as well. (GT)

AIDS MOVES FROM COAST TO HINTERLAND: The Minister of Health, Dr Suresh
Amonkar, said in spite of Goa being a highly literate State, there are 7,189
HIV-positive cases in the state, including 511 cases of full-blown AIDS. "In
addition, there may exist some hidden cases as well as those which have gone
unreported. (NT)

BIG B FOR THE BIG A: For Amitabh Bachchan being appointed as the first Asian
ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Foundation comes as yet another
responsibility that he has taken on with his trademark positivity. The job
on hand is to use his celebrity status to generate awareness about the
dreaded disease of AIDS in accordance with the "rules and policies of the

TUSSLE OVER DGP CONTROVERSY: As expected, the State government and the
Centre are engaged in a confrontation over the manner in which Goa's
Director General of Police Amod Kant was relieved of his services from the
State administration. Expressing displeasure over the order issued by the
joint secretary personnel, relieving Kant from Goa, the Union Ministry of
Home Affairs has written to the State government seeking clarification on
the issue. (H)

SKY BUS IS TAKING SHAPE: The sky station for the Sky Bus project is taking
shape just 50 metres away from the Margao Railway Station, and would be
completed in another three to four days. The two coaches that were damaged
during a trial run on 25 September are undergoing repairs at Kineco in
Pilerne Industrial Estate. They are expected to be ready by mid-December,
which they would be mounted on the test tract. (GT)

APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO PRESIDE: The Solemn Pontifical Mass at 10.30 am on the
occasion of the feast of St Francis Xavier at Old Goa on December 3 will be
presided over by Most Rev Pedro Lopez Quintana, Apostolic Nuncio in India.
The other concelebrants will be the Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao,
Archbishop-Patriarch Emeritus Raul Gonsalves, Papal Nuncio in South Africa
Archbishop Blasco Colaco, Bishop of Meerut Patrick Nair and Auxiliary Bishop
Emeritus of Brussels, Luk de Hovre. The masses on 3 December will start at 4
am followed by 5 other masses every hour till 9.30 am while masses in the
evening will be at 4 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm. The last mass will be in English.

WATER SHORTAGE IN OLD GOA AREAS: The water supply in Kantteabhat area in Old
Goa has been affected for the past ten days, specially after the Exposition
started. This is the regular scene during the Old Goa feast but the
authorities fail to find a solution to this problem. (GT)

CM'S ASSURANCE TO CALANGUTE RESIDENTS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on
December 1 assured a delegation of Calangute constituency villagers that the
government would settle their demands latest by Saturday - December 4. (GT)

IFFI DINNER ON CORJUEM BRIDGE? The recently inaugurated cable-stayed
Aldona-Corjuem bridge will turn into a dinner venue for the IFFI guests
(450-odd) and delegates on December 3. A lavish dinner will be hosted for
all IFFI Delegates, film stars, VVIPs and other special invites. (H)

BJP PROTESTS: The BJP Party Goa members participated in a nationwide
agitation called by the BJP against the price hike of petroleum products by
the United Progressive Alliance in Delhi on December 1. (GT)

KONKANI DRAMA CONTEST: The 3rd All Goa Meghashyam K Nayak Konkani drama
contest will be conducted at the Ravindra Bhavan from December 5. On the
inaugural day, there will be a procession by artistes and music bands from
the Curchorem Market to the Ravindra Bhavan. (H)

"CANTARAM' COMPETITION: Kala Academy will organise a "Cantaram" singing
competition on December 5 at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall. Mr Remmie
Colaco, veteran tiatr artiste, will be the chief guest and will inaugurate

WOMEN ARE MOST AFFECTED BY HIV: AMONKAR: Ninety per cent of the HIV cases
are in the age group of 15-45 years of age and one-third of the total
victims are girls, according to Health Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar. He was
addressing a gathering at the launch of the AIDS fortnight function at the
National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula. (H)

D-LINK'S NEW WIRELESS PLAYER: D-Link India Ltd has extended its hi-tech
product portfolio by introducing yet another hi-tech product - Medialounge
DSM-320 Wireless Media Player. The wireless media player distributes digital
music, video and photos stored on PCs to play and view on a television or
stereo system. It merges traditional consumer electronics with a PC network
for seamless delivery of multimedia content. (NT)

FOREIGNER DIES ON BOARD THE SHIP: A Taiwan ship 'Flander Harmony' was
proceeding from Taiwan to Fiji through the Indian ocean. At about 3.30 pm, a
sailor - Saa Cerezo Alejandro (55) of Chile - had a heart attack on the ship
about 500 nautical miles off Mormugao harbour. Ship authorities alerted the
Harbour, who in turn informed the Harbour police. (H)

KILLED IN ROAD MISHAP: Rosario Antonio Fernandes, a 64-year-old man from
Merces, died on the spot when a speeding Maruti rammed into his Scooty on
the Santa Cruz Merces Road on December 1 afternoon. The driver of the car is
yet to be arrested. (NT)

RAIDS YIELD RS.13,000: In yet another raid, the North Goa flying squad has
booked 40 cases under the Goa Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act,
earlier this week. The raids were conducted at Calangute and Candolim and
fines to the tune of Rs.13,000 were collected. (H)

INTER-COLLEGIATE PSYCHOLOGY FEST: The Post-Graduate Department of Psychology
of St Xavier's College will organise 'Xavier's Psycho Blitz 2004', a State
level inter-collegiate psychology festival on December 17. The one-day fest
is to promote Psychology in the Colleges affiliated to Goa University. (H)

NEPTUNE COMES TO EARTH: Neptune Chapotin produced some vintage stuff to keep
the delegates and people assembled at the IFFI venue outside the INOX
multiplexes riveted throughout his performance. The 21-year-old boy, who was
born in Goa, will perform in the courtyard of the old GMC complex from 4 pm
to 6 pm till 9 December. Neptune, who was brought up in the United States of
America learnt the art of riding unicycle, juggling, walking on his hands
and playing an instrument called jew's harp when he was six years old at the
Camp Winnarainbow in California, which is a circus and performing arts camp

GOAN DOCTOR BAGS AWARD: Dr Manohar R Dhume, a Goan orthodontist, won the
best clinical paper award for his paper titled, 'Evaluation of molar
distalization techniques in orthodontic practice: NiTi coil spring versus
K-Loop appliance. A Clinical Study" at the 39th Indian Orthodontic
Conference held recently at Davangere, Karnataka. Dr Dhume is private
practitioner in Panaji. (NT)
