VASCO MURDER SUSPECT NABBED: Goa police achieved a major breakthrough in the murder of prominent city-based physician Dr Shrikant Verenkar, with the arrest of prime suspect, Ryan Rudolph alias Rocky Fernandes (27) in Mumbai on January 18 night. Ryan Fernandes of Porvorim - a motocross rally participant, a recruiting agent and computer sales agent - was arrested at Marine Lines after police laid a trap for him. (H) DOC CREMATED, VASCO COMES TO A STANDSTILL: Activity in the otherwise busy port town came to standstill on Wednesday (Jan 19) morning as shops and establishments downed their shutters in support of the Vasco bandh called by prominent citizens of Vasco to mourn the tragic demise of Dr Srikant Verenkar, who was murdered on January 17 morning. (H) GT TIP-OFF HELPS: Gomantak Times investigations have revealed that on 13 January 2005, one Francis D'Sa from Agasaim went to a nationalized bank in Pernem to open a bank account. D'Sa came to the bank on 18 January with a cheque of Rs.10,50,000 and deposited in the bank. The cheque was issued from the joint account of Ryan Fernandes and Sarika Verenkar and drawn on the Panaji branch of a private bank. Team GT tipped off the police, who immediately picked up D'Sa from his residence in Agassaim. (GT) FEASIBILITY STUDY OF MOPA AIRPORT: The techno-economic feasibility study of the proposed Mopa airport has been entrusted to 'Airport de Paris', a French government firm, and a pre-final report is expected by June 2005. The government will then choose between the various options of technical and economic viability suggested by ADP. (NT) LEAKING LIFELINE: A new parallel pipeline to offset the frequent breakdown in the old one appears to have brought little relief as the water scarcity in South Goa reported on 15 January was attributed to the leakage in the alternate water supply network. The new pipeline sprung a leak at Malkarnem. (GT) SKYBUS DOOR FALLS OFF: The door of the Sky Bus coach slid down to the ground at the trial site in Margao on January 19 when the coach was on a routine trial run. The door fell down after the latch came off. No one was injured. The incident came moments after KRC managing director, B Rajaram, took members of the national media on a trial run. (H) HUBBY ARRESTED FOR KILLING WIFE: Bicholim police has arrested Babi from Dhangarwad-Bicholim on charges of killing his wife Usha B Fale (29) by setting her ablaze on January 12. (H) 1000 SSI UNITS CLOSED DOWN: Reeling under tremendous pressures of all sorts, as many as 1000 small scale industries out of 6800 in Goa have closed down posing a serious concern about the future of such industries in the State, according to Keshav Kamat, President of the Goa Small Industries Association. Speaking on the second day of the "Interface 2005" at the Kala Academy on January 19, Kamat said, "The small scale industry which employs 42,000 people is passing through a bad phase." (H) MORE WATER TANKS IN MARGAO: The Fatorda MLA, Mr Damu Naik, said plans are afoot to construct more water tanks in Margao to meet the growing demand. (NT) DEPLOY TRAFFIC POLICE ALONG HIGHWAY INTERSECTIONS: With the recent head-on collision between two buses on the Mandovi bridge, the Porvorim residents Welfare Association has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of road mishaps. "There is an urgent need to deploy traffic police along the highway intersections, junctions and roundabouts, especially during peak hours," a press note states. (Santosh Naik, Vasco, in GT) THE APOSTLE OF ART: Kala Academy presents an exhibition of paintings "The Apostle of Art" by Vishwanath G Nageshkar, a Goan by origin but born and brought up in Kolhapur. He belongs to the first generation of Modern Indian artists, which was a crucial phase of transition from traditional to modern. He was born on 18th April 1910 and died on 18th March 2001. He studied at JJ School of Art. Nageshkar studied under the eminent British art maestro Captain Gladstone Solomon, who believed that Indian art should not be derivative of Western Art but it should have its own identity. After completing his studies at JJ School he went to Paris in 1933 to study at Ecole National Superienre de Beaux Art. From the year 1938 to 40 he studied at the Kunstakademic, Munchen, Germany. Manda has been accompanying her father out at sea and into the river Zuari ever since she was seven. Today, she is an expert at Kantaie fishing. She maneuvers the outboard motor-fitted country craft with awesome finesse.She is a FYBCom student at Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce in Pilar.Whenever the need arises, Manda still carries a basketful of fish on her head, walks up the steep slope to the Goa University campus, then takes a bus to the Panaji market and drops off the fish there. "I am not shy to work. I am proud to down at I am doing," says the affable teenager whose aim is to become a chartered account.
