CLEANING OF ASSAGAO SPRING ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the occasion of the Republic Day, 26th January, 2005, one full day programme was held by the N.S.S. students of St. Xavier’s College to clean the dilapidated and hidden natural spring in Assagao Village. The students numbering around 100, went to the picturesque green village straight to the spring known as “Tollem ao Norte de Rigueiro” a spring located on the northern borders of Assagao, belonging to the Communidade of Assagao. The programme was taken up as part of the "Adoption of Assagao Village" for the year 2004-2005.
The spring was covered with thick shrubs and bushy trees thus rendering the access to the spring impossible. This spring is around 500 years old, but has not been taken note of, since there is no clear road leading to the site. Soon after flag-hoisting function in the College the students went about with the job beginning at 10.00 a.m. The task was arduous, however it was completed by evening at 6.00 p.m. Today, people can comfortably venture and enjoy natural water bath that the spring offers. In the vicinity, the space can be used for organising picnics and befriending nature. The programme was co-ordinated by Mr. Pradeep Morajkar, Mr. Manoj Salgaokar, Mr. Cajetan Raposo, Mr. Dharma Chodankar and Ms. Santana Fernandes, all lecturers from St. Xavier's College, Mapusa.
