Cecil, You do have a point in the "like themselves" discussion. I can see how "like themselves" can be construed to mean only village and parentage, etc., But the fact that Ariosto and I are RC permeates our personalities to such an extent that I've always seen us as being "the same" although he might feel different.
WRT to my, ahem, "radical observations," I believe a number of them ended with a question mark, which renders them QUESTIONS, not observations. Questions are designed to solicit information, my dear Cecil, which is precisely the opposite of making observations. I've never pretended to be an expert on Goa or things Goan but I believe I'm allowed to solicit information and opinions from other subscribers, isn't that what the list is for??? (MEMO TO CECIL, the preceding is a question! Please don't accuse me of making radical observations about the list.) When I asked if it's just as likely that domestic workers don't want to marry brahmins as it is that brahmins don't want to marry domestic workers you could have responded with a YES or a NO followed by your reasons. That is the response I was hoping for, one which would engender a discussion about class and caste. Viviana
