Portugal: World Goa Day - Dia de Goa Damao e Diu 2005
20 August, 16, 17 & 18 September

This World Goa Day celebration in Portugal (Dia de Goa, Damao e Diu) is the 3rd one to be held in thta country since 2001 when I took the initiative to start it. Then, in 2002 the scope expanded and I coordinated an alliance of all the Goa, Daman and Diu associations (then 6, now 5) in Portugal in a joint organization committe.

In 2001 we had a lunch, a debate and some music.

In 2002, I would like to underline:
- Bus tour (around 150 people) to roads, squares, buildings etc. in Lisbon's toponimy related to Goa, with edition of a booklet with the relevant history and background to each place - Musical show at the historical 18th century Teatro da Trindade, in Lisbon, with presentations of music & dance by Surya and Ekvat, and by Grupo Coral de Damao e Diu.
- Youth meeting and carrom tournament
- Conferences on "Identity of Goa"
and may other events during 4 days

In 2003, I would like to underline:
- Cultural festival Goa, Daman and Diu with Goan music, debates, food, youth encounter, slides etc. - Film Festival Goa in Images: Amchem Noxib and documentary Bhaile (with debate on tourism impact in Goa) - Gala dinner with Municipality President of Coimbra (cooperation agreement with Daman), and representants of Loures (Diu) and Lisbon municipalities + administrators of Fundacao Gulbenkian and Fundacao Oriente
and other events

Now in 2005:
a great programme worked out by the organization committe under the brilliant coordination of Eng. Leão Fernandes (Saligao) who has taken up the task after my departure from Portugal. Though he has a full-time job and a family, he has given as much as he could, and the excellent result is out! He did not only maintain the always difficult-to-maintain alliance of
- Associacao Recreativa e Cultural Indo-Portuguesa (ARCIP)
- Surya, Movimento Cultural e Ecologico de Goa
- Casa de Goa
- Associação Cultural de Amigos de Goa, Damão e Diu
- Associação Fraternidade Damão, Diu e Simpatizantes
but also support from many institutions and municipalities.

If you have any queries, support, messages, please send them to

and if you can, why not drop by in Lisbon?

Best regards,
Constantino Hermanns Xavier
(coordinator 2001-2004; 2005 organization committe member)
