Coincidentally, today the Summer 2005 issue of ETS (Equipment Training and Simulation) was released in Tottenham, London. It has a feature article, (1176 words), on the Indian Navy's presence at Dabolim.

Excerpts: Indian Navy Ship (INS) Hansa was originally commissioned as a land base in 1961 at Tamil Nadu.

With the liberation of the Portuguese enclave of Goa in 1961, the airfield at Dabolim with its 7,800 feet runway became available and in June 1964, INS Hansa moved in ...

Since then the airfield has grown dramatically and today, INS Hansa has become the Indian Navy's premier airbase, employing some 2,000 naval aviation personnel and more than 1,000 civilians.

The runway length has been increased to over 10,000 feet to allow 24-hour operations for military traffic and inclusive tour charters from Europe ...

The Indian Navy is going through a major expansion with new types of aircraft being inducted in the next five years ... increasing utilisation of airspace around Goa.

The Navy realised the need to shift its base out of Mumbai as far back as December 1961, the year Goa was liberated.
