Mumbai, Goa deal with wild elephants - By Pamela DMello Panaji, Dec. 8: Three wild elephants that have strayed from their herd are alternatively being driven back and forth between Maharashtra and Goa in the absence of a joint effort between the states to rationally deal with the situation. Early this week, three elephants, believed to be the same two females and a calf that were driven into Maharashtra in September 2005, appeared in border villages in Goas northern Pernem district. Reports from the area spoke of destruction of banana plantations and minor property. On Thursday morning, forest officials said the animals had been driven back into the forests across the border. Efforts are also being made to monitor the area to prevent any re-crossing. The animals reappearance in Goa had rekindled fears of their earlier foray into Goa, where several villages lived in fear. The pachyderms had then progressed inwards causing some havoc in their wake, resulting in one death, as villagers attempted to scare them away with firecrackers. Wildlife officials from Goa, in September this year, requisitioned special kunki elephants and their handlers to assist in driving the pachyderms across the forested border. Officials now say their reappearance in Goa is a case of them being driven back into Goa forests.
