TIATRIST PAL SOARES.
Till very recently, the name Pal Soares was very popular in Goa on Konkani
Stage. He is one of the well known Goan playwrights, directors, composers
and actors hailing from Utorda, Salcette, Goa. He is very fresh in Kuwait
first time landing into this country in May last year. Since his coming to
Kuwait he is hearing lot of stories of popularity in Kuwait of Konkani
dramas namely Tiatros, Non-Stop Tiatros & One Act Plays. Being a popular
tiatrist himself he feels the urge to stage his own dramas in Kuwait, if
not, at least to participate in any of the tiatros organized by many of the
famous tiatrists including his earlier colleagues, friends and villagers.
But does everyone know that he is in Kuwait to introduce him on Kuwait
Konkani Stage? Hence I said let me introduce to Kuwait Goans this well
known tiatirst whose one Tiatro has even been staged in New Delhi and that
too not thru pushing and begging but the organizers themselves approached
him to take his troupe to Delhi because of the sheer quality of his Tiatro
MAKA SOEG DIAT. This was his Tiatro not only in Delhi but also in many
parts of Goa where it was staged 36 times said Pal Soares with pride. The
other well acclaimed tiatro of his was Zago which was also staged in many
parts of Goa. His well known Non-Stop Dramas are (1) Samazache Dusman (2)
Noxib Ravta (3) Amkam Noxib Na and (4) Jivea Rupan Dev which was acclaimed
as one of the best ever staged in Goa and for which even the late ace
director Dr. Ruzario Rodrigues complimented him, said Soares. This
particular drama earned him lot of fame and one reason for the grand success
of this drama was the induction into this play of all the topmost Goan
artistes including Felcy and her teacher sister Aplon. Mr. Soares takes
pride in both these sisters for their grand roles they played in his plays
and for their total support and cooperation.
Basically, Pal Soares is a Non-Stop Drama artiste but he came into limelight
by staging One Act Plays in his locality and up to now he wrote, directed
and staged 6 One Act Plays, one of them Novem Jivit was staged in many
parts of Goa with the participation of very good actors. Being a well known
writer and director he is respected by all segments of Konkani Stage
artistes. Many of his admirers and colleagues when informed of his
departure from Goa for greener pastures in the Gulf, they along with his
fans were surprised that he was leaving Goa when he was gaining so much of
goodwill and popularity in Goa. Before coming to Kuwait, for a very short
period he worked in Dubai and Iraq too. According to Soares, though he
earned lot of goodwill and respect from the audience yet financially he did
not earn to make him satisfied in this profession. In fact he said with
regret that many times he had to spend money from his own pocket to sustain
this activity for which even his family members showed their opposition. It
is not he alone who sailed in this boat, all the top tiatrists who came to
Gulf came only for the sake of money including Mendes Bros and F.X Pereira.
When Mendes Bros came to Kuwait in 1976/77, they were the topmost comedians
on Konkani Stage and F. X. Pereira was the best solo singer, all of them
were in high demand in Goa and Bombay, their entry on the stage was creating
sensation in the Hall. But all these did not give them required monetary
benefits and hence they left for Kuwait and with the exception of F. X.
Pereira, all the Mendes Bros are still working in Kuwait and living a happy
and decent life.
While working in Kuwait as a Technician in a private firm that has recruited
him directly from Goa, he intends to stage at least one of his best dramas,
preferably Maka Soeg Diat of course if any Bom Samaritan either from his
village or from any organization or individual helps him to do so since he
is novice in Kuwait. He loves to spread his message thru dramas which he
loves so much and to promote it he will go to any extent within his
capacity. His purpose in staging dramas and acting is not to make money but
to promote his drama art.
Speaking on the current situation and schism in Kuwait amongst Goan
tiatrists, he said all tiatrists should work in unison for the good and
promotion of Tiatro. We are all come here to work and as such we should
work nicely, stay nicely and be good to others. We tiatrists should not
create and promote discriminations amongst us and neither support the
discriminators. Today we are here but tomorrow we dont know where we will
be. If we do good for the promotion and development of this art thru the
unity of Tiatrists we will be remembered as heroes of Konkani Stage and if
we act otherwise, then we will be remembered in the history of Tiatro and
Tiatrists in Kuwait as murderers of Tiatro and murderers of Tiatrists in
Kuwait, this should not be our motto, said Soares. Further he went on
saying that in Kuwait, Goans are enjoying very good reputation as decent
and cooperative and helpful people. Let us maintain this credit.
According to Pal Soares, the best Writer and Director of Konkani Stage
was the late Dr. Rosario Rodrigues. Such a writer and director will not
easily come on Konkani stage. Best Actor: Antush. Best Actress: Felcy and
Best Comedian: Humbert. And Best Charitable artiste on Konkani Stage is:
Prince Jacob.
