Kuwait City: G.O.A Maroons won the prestigious 16th NYC Rolling Trophy tournament organized by Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) beating seasoned campaigners AVC Overseas Association by a solitary second half goal in the final played at Soor Ground on Friday, 30th December 2005. Both the finalists fought evenly in the first half --- AVC were dominant, but their control bred complacency; they lacked the usual cohesion and rhythm displayed in earlier games. Maroons' defense too, kept the AVC attack at bay throughout the match. Within minutes of the second half re-start, a lapse by goalkeeper Jose Fernandes allowed Maroons to forge into the lead -- Manuel Dourado finding the back of the net that proved to be enough. Maroons goalkeeper Roman was outstanding thereafter and defender Jerry Mello saved the team on occasions too. AVC created a number of moves late into the match but Maroons desperately defended the lone goal --- and managed to see out the clock to lift the coveted trophy. The final played on a chilly, sunny morning was attended by a large number of enthusiastic spectators. Mr. Tareq Al Shumamari, Accounts Expert - Ministry of Justice was the chief guest on the occasion. In between briefings during the match, Mr. Tareq was informed how much Indians and Goans in particular love football, and the sacrifices they go through to conduct football tournaments. He acknowledged and appreciated efforts put in by NYC members to successfully complete 16 editions of the Rolling Trophy. "We in Kuwait love football and we will always encourage Indian football and NYC to prosper with these activities." Mr. Tareq Al Shumamari later said in his speech. Mr. M.P. Dalbehera, General Manager The City International Exchange Co. (Official sponsor of NYC football team) was the guest of honor. In his speech, Mr. Dalbehera praised "soccer abilities of Indians in Kuwait and appreciated efforts put in by everyone to promote Indian football." Inspired by the overwhelming talent at Soor Ground, Mr. Dalbehera suggested KIFF to invite Indian football selectors in Kuwait to watch the boys and consider their selection. Reaven D' Souza, Managing Editor-in-Chief - The Times (Weekly Newspaper), and Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) President Manuel D' Costa were among other distinguished guests present at the function. "NYC does it again --- a perfect and flawless organization of the 16th NYC Trophy Finals," remarked one of the dignitaries present at the final. NYC President Agnello A. S. Fernandes introduced the guests at the prize distribution function and thanked everyone who helped in making the tournament a grand success. "We wish to promote friendship through the game," stated the President whilst congratulating the new champions. He had compassionate words for the losers too as he added -- "You are never so near to victory as when defeated in a good game." NYC Gen. Secretary Gasper Crasto 'compered' the proceedings. G.O.A Maroons President Raymond D'Sa was ecstatic on being crowned champions, "We have been together as a team and club, players and members --- for many years now...Our hard-work this season has won us the trophy and its very rewarding..." The NYC Rolling trophy, perhaps one of the most uniquely sculpt trophies worldwide was instituted in the year 1991-92. The tournament played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) and officiated by IFRA referees provides players with the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition, while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play -- in perhaps one of India's most prestigious football tournament abroad.
