Arlekar alleges rampant corruption in government HERALD CORRESPONDENT MORMUGAO, FEB 7 - Vasco MLA Rajendra Arlekar on Tuesday stated that the present Congress government has succeeded in bringing the youth on the streets. "If one goes to Panjim, one will find various youth groups right from pre-employment, computer teachers to PWD workers, agitating right in front of the Secretariat. The BJP government did not witness such agitations," said Mr Arlekar, while addressing a press conference. He claimed that corruption has reached such a height that it has spread right from the minister to the peon and added that he would highlight instances of corruption at a public meeting outside the Mormugao Municipal building on February 9 at 5.30 pm. "The present government is insensitive towards public issues and all these issues will be highlighted on February 14 at a morcha which will be staged during the assembly. Commenting on the four-lane highway, he stated that when the BJP was in power, ex-chief minister Manohar Parrikar and former union surface minister Shripad Naik had met residents of Sada and assured them that they would not be displaced due to the four-lane highway. They had suggested that work on the four-lane highway be stopped at the Sada junction and that, a fly-over could be constructed at Desterro which would connect to the port. Mr Arlekar said the BJP would oppose moves to displace the families of Sada and Jetty when there is an alternate plan and added that, he had met Shipping Secretary T Joseph and had requested him to revise the four-lane highway proposal. -- Salaam ali kum.
