Successful surgery performed at NUSI BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, FEB 9 - NUSI hospitals Cuncolim recently performed a successful surgery on traumatic spine on a 22-year old girl who had sustained injuries on her back and right wrist joint following a fall. After examination in the hospital, the girl was found paraplegic (paralysis of both legs from waist downwards) and a C-Scan of the spine revealed burst fracture of vertebra with fragments in the spinal cord. A four-hour long surgery was later performed on the patient by Dr Sainath V Vaingankar, Consultant Orthopaedic and trauma surgeon and his team at NUSI hospitals, wherein the posterior instrumentation of the spine was done with Harrington rods and hooks with decompression of the spinal canal to remove the bony fragments pressing on the spinal cord. Presently, the patient has started moving her legs and can even sit up and stand up and can take a few steps with the help of a walker.
