Alphonso mangoes, cashew nuts to be available at post offices

Panaji, Feb 17 (PTI) Indian postal department will sell cashew nuts from
Ratnagiri and Goa and delicious Alfonso mango through their 100-odd
outlets at Mumbai.

"This will be in addition to our existing commodities like fast moving
Hallmark cards sold through the outlets," said K Noorjaha, Chief
Postmaster General, Maharashtra circle.

The Indian Postal department's Maharashtra circle has decided to promote
such commodities, she said adding, "the sale of cashew nuts has been
started in December last year and we are getting an overwhelming
response. With these additional activities, Maharashtra circle expects
to earn revenue of Rs 10 million per month." The postal outlets also
sell Hallmark cards, Mango pulp, Aloe Vera, Neelkamal, Dunkun tea and
others, Noorjahan added.

"The postal department has tied up with several cooperative societies in
Konkan and Goa belt to procure cashew nuts while mango pulp is supplied
by an Ashram in Konkan," stated Col K C Mishra, postmaster general,
Mumbai.
The postal department has already launched their service of ordering
'prasad' across the counters. "The prasad' from Mahalaxmi temple in
Mumbai, Sri Sai Baba's temple at Shirdi, Sabarimalai in Kerala,
Siddhivinayak in Mumbai besides other prominent places can be ordered,"
he said.

According to Noorjahan, Maharashtra circle is the only circle in the
entire country to make a surplus. "In 2003-04, we were revenue surplus
by Rs 160 mn and 2004-05, Rs 400 mn. We target 40 per cent growth this
year," she said.
Though the Maharashtra circle made Rs 3.6 mn revenue on the avertisement
on mail vans, they are not getting enough response, she added. PTI
