Communal violence: Margao police take no chances BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, MARCH 4 — Margao police personnel fanned out to various parts of the city on Saturday, maintaining a close vigil against any fall out of the communal violence witnessed in the twin towns of Sanvordem and Curchorem. In fact, the city was abuzz with rumours throughout the day that there was problem in the sensitive area of Khareband, which has a sizeable Muslim populace. Police as well as residents of Khareband denied any communal flare up in the area. Also, there were rumours that a bandh will be enforced in the city in the afternoon, but members of the Hindu and Muslim community denied having any plans for a bandh today. An armed police guard was maintained at the sensitive Monte Hill area inhabited by the migrants, mostly comprising of the minority community. Elsewhere, mobile patrolling was intensified in areas such as Housing Board, Gogol, Khareband, Sirvodem as a precautionary measure. "The police do not want to take any chances given the sensitive nature of the situation", said Margao Police station incharge, PI Santosh Dessai. In fact, Dessai was personallly seen moving around the city as a precautionary measure, holding discussions with members of different communities.
