New Delhi, May 11 : A techno-economic feasibility report on the second
airport in Mumbai has been sent to the International Civil Aviation
Organisation (ICAO) for examination, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel
said today.

The report is based on a study on simultaneous operations of the existing
and the proposed new airport in the western metropolis, he said in reply to
a question in Lok Sabha.

Maharashtra government has proposed that the second airport be constructed
at Navi Mumbai, he said adding there were well-laid procedures for
development of greenfield airports.

"The above proposal has to conform with the prescribed conditions before
approval of the government is given," Patel said.

He said the government was aware of air traffic congestion at Delhi and
Mumbai airports, but Kolkata and Chennai airports did not face congestion
"at present".

In reply to another question, the Minister said as many as 33 airports
across the country, maintained by the Airports Authority of India, have been
closed or are non-operational at present. Further, there were four more
airports where there was no air traffic movement.

He said a tripartite committee comprising representatives of AAI, his
Ministry and AAI Employees Joint Forum has been set up to look into the
issues and proposals of modernising airports by AAI and those relating to
the employees.

Although the Committee has met thrice, its report was "yet to be submitted",
Patel said.
