The Saint is the saint for all and access to the Basilica should be unrestricted. I was visiting Old Goa in 1987 and made it a point to visit the Se Cathedral and the Basilica. I discovered that the Basilica was shut down to the general public because a "private" nuptial ceremony was being celebrated inside. Probably some politician or some other influential bhattkar had pulled some strings. At the same time there must have been at least 500 people who appeared to have journeyed from most parts of India of various religious affiliations, who had come to Old Goa to pay their respects or just visit the famous missionary and were milling about outside wondering what was going on and why they were being denied entry. I found this situation abominable and made no bones about how I felt about the situation to the couple of thugs who were manning the barricades. I had to restrain myself because I was carrying a foreign passport. On a similar visit to the not-as-well-known shrine "Miraculous Infant Jesus" in Bangalore, there was an unending stream of people of all religious persuasions who behaved with dignity and respect that is due at such an institution. Because one or two people misbehaved, it would be unfair to deprive most everybody of their right to visit the Basilica to view the saint or pay their respects. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Herman D'Souza" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" <goanet@lists.goanet.org> Cc: "goanet goanet" <goanet@goanet.org>; "joeuk goanet" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2006 3:51 AM Subject: Re: [Goanet] Tours banned from Xavier Basilica, guides upset - I SUPPORT THE BAN > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > * G * O * A * N * E * T **** C * L * A * S * S * I * F * I * E * D * S * > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Enjoy your holiday in Goa.
