Hi Alan, Thanks for sharing with us your educational experience. It should be a wake up call for many of our Goan underachievers in school and no one should be written off as mediocre because there are a number of late bloomers in life.
However, in this high tech economy, we should encourage and inspire all our Goan students to aim straight for the top and get into medical schools or the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and not the ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes). Its not just a matter of interchanging syllables - there is a VERY BIG difference ! While the IITs train their graduates to be graduate engineers with B.Tech, M. Tech and PhD degrees, which lead to careers as engineers, scientists, top level managers, executives, academics, captains of industry (and even Chief Minister) - The ITI training leads to Diplomas and relatively lower level technician, and trade jobs in most cases. There are seven IITs at present with sprawling campuses in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur (near Calcutta), Roorkee and in Guwahati (Assam). ITIs can be found in every metropolitan area. While all our Goan students who aim for the IITs may not get in because of the stringent IIT Joint Entrance Exams (IIT JEE) at the end of the 12th standard - If they prepare for the IIT JEE in advance they will atleast be able to get into the engineering colleges which train their graduates to be graduate engineers with a BE (Bachelor of Engineering) degree. However for all Goans, IIT awareness and preparation in Maths and Science should start from Grade 1. We have had many outsanding Goans who have graduated from the IITs - for example Victor Menezes (former CEO of Citibank), Ashank Desai (Founder/CEO of Mastek Inc.), former CM Manohar Parrikar and even Fr. Francis D'Mello (head of the Bombay Jesuit province), just to name a few. We should leave all the ITI slots, skills and trades for the non-Goan students from nearby Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala and encourage our Goans to get into the IITs and Engineering colleges en masse for the greater glory of Goa ! Best Regards, Dr. Carmo D'Cruz, Goan, IITian - Class of 82, Indian Harbour Beach, Florida. >From: Goanet Reader >Subject: [Goanet-news] Goanet Reader: Of lemons, bricks and melons: don't > >Of lemons, bricks and melons: don't write off anyone as mediocre > >Alan Dias > >Each of us have in us the ability and capacity to make a >difference to our own life and to that of others with whom we >interact in the journey we call life.
