MONDAY MUSE (24 July 2006)
SPEAK WITH CAUTION…

The dastardly serial-bomb attacks on Mumbai and Srinagar have distressed
everybody. The actions of disturbing peace underline the anti-humanity
attitudes of terrorists. No rationale can justify the killing of innocents.
The attacks on our civilization must be fought with determination and
solidarity. The concern is reflected in the many messages we receive on our
cellular phones and e-mail. However, sometimes we receive a totally misguided
missive and here is an attempt to clear the thought pollution.

“Every XYZ (referring to a religious community) is not a terrorist… … but why
is every terrorist a XYZ? Awaken India!” The above short message is long on
dangerous rhetoric which needs to be challenged and countered immediately.
Just consider the assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, JFK,
Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and other famous leaders. What religion did the
killers belong to? Is it logical to cast prejudiced accusations on a person,
just because he belongs to the same religion as the terrorist? It is pertinent
to note that this loose talk is corrupting our thinking which eventually
provokes actions. Surely, such talk too can be described as verbal terrorism
for it murders basic human values and discriminates against fellow human
beings.

One day, we may be stopped in our tracks by a maniacal mob… … and be
confronted with the questions… “What’s your religion? Same as ours? Or
different like theirs?” And our lives will depend … on our answers … and
their religion! We must ask ourselves whether we have learnt any lessons from
the numerous killings, brutal attacks and rapist rioting, born of divisive
religious fanaticism…

Let’s refrain from bigoted, intolerant and partisan talk For it is the
spiteful talk that inspires the spiteful walk We must be sensitive and
sensible in every spoken reaction Combating terrorism needs us to “speak
through action”!

Pravinda
