The article by Andrew Dias from Singapore pinpoints one major problem in our
schools and that is absolutely lack of counselling; I am personally not far
out from Andrew academically, but professionally life is quite different.
Children sometimes develop late and in India academic performance is what is
all about. We all seem to be trained to work for others. As far as practical
training is concerned I had tried to get admission in St Vincent's technical
school in Poona but the priest in charge would not bother to talk or provide
a form for admission. In actual life the practical hands on approach pays
much better and very much in demand. I hope that all the schools in our
villages have ITI institutions where children can take a more practical
approach to their studies than the dreadful thought of going through exams
and obtaining marks that are very low and degrees on subjects where they do
not have any aptitude.
