Those were the days !!!

As i sit here in Jakarta, thousand of miles away from my land Goa,
I recall the moments spent in the arms of nature, I recall the moments
where the vast open fields (after harvesting) used to be our playground,
where catching fish in small ponds and streams used to be a joyful pastime.
I feel pity and sad to see our new generation kids in their mechanical lives,
more focused on the television sets, engaged in video games and internet.
How fast the natural games have replaced with tempting technology games!!!
How fast mother nature is replaced with concrete walls in the name of
development !!!

Those were the days, when we were walking to and back from school used to be
an
adventurous experience, admiring pollution free lush green surroundings.
On the way, we would dodge cows & buffalows who were grazing, chase
butterflies, collect mangoes
and compete with fellow friends for fun.

Our school bag specially made out of normal cloth, stitched by our mother used
to be a nice
store room for books as well as our adventurous items like Catapult and bow &
arrows.
Raw tamarind, raw mangoes and salt used to be our usual stock in the bags.

Those were the days, homemade snacks and tea would be carried to school. Now
parents find it
more convenient to buy hamburgers and bottled drinks for their children.

Those were the days, when we used to make our paper boats and leave them in the
stream, watching them sail away from our
sight. Catch a frog and tie string to it's leg and control their hops !!( yes,
we do find it cruel now).
Lizards would be our main target, catch and nail them on the coconut trees and
come back the next day to
see how the ants have savoured the flesh !!! ........and the dirtiest......
during rainy season, dig in the wet mud and pull out
earthworms, so that we use them as a bait on our fishing rods to fish in the
gushing waters. Our fishing rods used to be made of
simple bamboo stick....

Those were the days, when we would drench ourselves in the rains and play
football in mud and after we reach home, we had no choice but to take the
spanking. It's worth the fun we had whilst playing football. We would venture
into the closeby forest
to collect berries and cashews, the taste was so relishing - now it's a dream.

Now, whenever we go on short annual vacation, we see the drastic change
everywhere where concrete jungle dominates the natural beauty around. Money can
buy us lot of things and we console ourselves saying it's worth that amount and
comforts, wherein we sacrifice the real 'taste' and natural enjoyment.

Now, to see children playing in the compound soil/sand is looked upon as a
dirty habit and uncivilised way of bringing them up.
Whenever, we go down to Goa for vacation, my three and half year old son
loves and enjoys playing outside in the soil & sand and we allow him, inspite
of severe opposition from all around us. I could see the joy and excitement
on my son's face and that gives me the satisfaction. We try our best to give
him the little natural surrounding we fortunately have now. In future, no
doubt, the land will be covered with cement or tiles and no sand & soil will
be freely available.

The nature has been replaced by all artificial gadgets. The advanced technology
war has wiped off all the natural games and adventures.
The time is here where children absent mindedly use calculator to sum up 1
+ 1.

Advanced technology and changes are required for development and to be in par
with the developed nations, but simultaneously this should not be achieved at
the cost of our nature, morals, domestic traditons and culture.
I know I'll be considered as an old fashioned guy having above views, but no
one will look into the facts and realities of our changing time, which is
spreading like a killer disease.
I would like to conclude by asking " Where are we heading to ?? "
