ROSEFERNS' KONKANI TIATR FOR WORLD GOA DAY IN GERMANY

The Goan Association Germany celebrated the World Goa Day 2006 on 22 July 06
in the most traditional way, with a cultural offering of a Konkani
tiatr "Tumchea Moga Passot", written and directed by Roseferns -billed as the
King of Centuries - and enacted by his troupe of eight, who had come from
Goa. This is the second year the GAG is celebrating the WGD.

Following the speech by Mariano Pereira -the general secretary, and a welcome
speech by Matano Gracias -the President, the programe got off with WGD's theme
song "Proud to be a Goan" penned by Spain-based Basilio Magno at the request
of WGD founder Rene Barreto. The hilarious comedy, interposed with melodious
songs, was a special treat for Goans in Germany, who never had the chance of
seeing a Konkani tiatr on stage; this is the first time a full Konkani tiatr
has been shown there.

Roseferns, who is celebrating his 25th year of his brilliant tiatrical career
and his 60th dramatic production, had come with his famous troupe, comprising:
LAWRY -melody king; ANTONETTE - melody queen, SALLY -ace comedian, SEBY -new
comdey prince, TARI - the latest Goan craze, KEZIAH -the favourite of young
and old, JAMES VAZ -topmost organist. James was joined by two London based
musicians: drummer Pauly, and guitarist Philip. Lending their presence in
Germany were also the chairman of Konkani Dramatic Association London Mr.
Damciano, and the general secretary Francis D'Silva. It is the KDA that brings
the tiatrs from Goa to London, and thanks to their courtesy the GAG brought
them to Germany, paying for theier Germany visas and fares from London, and
modest professional fees. The Managing Comittee of GAG took care of their
board and lodge.

Artistically, the Tiatr was a great success and everyone enjoyed it
thoroughly, even some of those who were not familiar with Konkani. Some
Goans, like in any part of the world, shy of Konkani and do not wish to appear
to know the language. But thos who loved Konkani and its mainstay -tiatrs,
travelled hundreds of kilometers, coming from far off places like Sturttgart,
Kaiserslautern, Bad Willdungen, Bad Kreuznach, Paderborn and Freiburg.
Conspicious by their absence were many Goans from Ruesselsheim -a town only 30
kms from Frankfurt-Preun-gesheim, where the tiatr was staged Germany has a
small Goan comunity, and to bring a big show like this one goes beyond their
financial capabilities. But they had hoped for larger audience.

The presence of just 100 or so spectators, and consequent loss to the Goa
Association Germany, prompted Francis D'Silva - the general secretary of the
Konkani Dramatic Association to offer the GAG a free tiatr of their own in
autumn, paying themselves for their travel from London, etc., to help to make
up for the loss. Great gesture indeeed, on the part of KDA uk, whose passion
it appears to be the promotion of Konkani language through Konkani tiatrs and
songs.
