Dears,

An agitation invariably has free-loaders that gather around it, just as
jackals and hyenas follow the path of a tiger. They then feast on the
substantial left overs ....without ever needing to hunt their prey. Rajan
Narayan has always been a jackal. He used the 1986-87 KPA agitation for Konkani
to boost the circulation of the fledgling oHeraldo in English and now smells an
opportunity to boost the sales of "Goan Observer". Like the jackal that does
not kill, Rajan speaks no Konkani. Without doubt, the circulation of all
newspapers will go up in the run-up to the Assembly elections, fuelled by two
strap-on tanks: Language agitations and introduction of English in primary
schools from Std.I. As the time progresses, these strap on tanks may be
jettisioned and the rocket may be run on the 'solid fuel' of communal violence.
The CM will play the role of Nero well. He has played it with aplomb before, he
will do it better now with the hindsight borne through experience. The
then ASI NarayanYetle, who was painted as the demon during the 20 December,
1986, incident is actually not such a bad person.[ See "Gulab" January, 1987
www.gulabonline.com or Goencho Ulo January, 2006 www.goacom.com/goa for details
of the incident]. In fact , he was quite helpful when I met him at the Valpoi
Police Station in 1996.

Konkani in Roman script will not be 'official' tender tomorrow....unless the
elections to the Assembly are on the day after tomorrow! It is going to be a
long drawn out movement like a marathon race. If we have the stamina, we will
reach the stadium. If not we will fall unnoticed by the wayside. The important
thing is to build stamina. It only comes from consistently telling everyone the
truth, every time. It also comes from consensus after level headed
discussions...not fiery arguments.

Those of you who read the only Devanagri Konkani newspaper in the world,
SUNAPARANT, will remember Subhash Velingkar's article on Jesuit missionaries
and SFX "He Sont Kai Soitan?" that was reproduced verbatim in the GOENCHO ULO
Vors 2 Ank 1 April-June 2006 issue on pages 9 and 10. The transliteration was
done by a visibly agitated Fr.Pratap Naik,SJ, who is a Jesuit himself and lives
in the campus that has the Xavier Centre for Historical Research named after
SFX, our very own Goencho Saib. No one could be further off the mark than Rajan
Narayan in accusing Fr.Pratap Naik of striking a deal with Subhash Velingkar. I
know both of them...though they know not each other. Subhash Velingkar had a
vocational course in Horticulture where his own daughter, Geeta, studied from
1997 to 1999. I have taught her there and she has also done one month on-job
training in horticulture with me. I met Fr. Pratap around the same time, also
because of plants since he wanted to know the names
of the plants at TSKK, Porvorim. They both do their job with single minded
purpose. As far as I know, they are now on a collision course. time will bear
this out.

Viva Konkani. I am proud of my mother tongue...and I write it in Roman script
on the rare occasions that I write Konkani at all. My mother tongue is best on
my tongue, not in my hands. If I read Sunaparant, I obviously have no problem
with Devanagri, either. I again experienced first hand the animosity for that
script in Salcete last Monday. It is not a common experience in Bardez, where I
was born, lived amidst hindus and continue to do so to this day. My present day
neighbour is the aunt of Shri Narahari Haldankar, BJP MLA of Valpoi. In my
childhood I called her 'Aiyee'. I call her the same today. She calls me "Baba"
as she always did, since I was two years old or so. For every feast and
birthday in her house she sends us food. We reciprocate during our feasts and
birthdays with food that they eat. I write both languages, English and
Konkani, in the Roman script. She does not write in any script. Both of us
speak Konkani and we understand each other perfectly. Roman
script has created no rift amongst us.

Scripts do not separate us: we do it ourselves, intentionally.

  Viva Goa.

Subject: [Goanet] ROMAN DEAL OF PRATAP NAIK?

  FR. NAIK'S CLARIFICATION:
Fr. Pratap Naik castigated Mr Rajan Narayan for fomenting confusion
associating him with Mr Subhash Velingker . He said that his demand is for
Konkani in Roman script on par with Devanagari . How Mr Subhash Velingker a
teacher,----- who had in his article called St Francis Xavier "Sant or Saitan"
in Sunaparant daily, be linked to Fr Pratap Naik?
Fr Naik stated that most of the Press resorted to distortion of news and
provoked confusion.

ROMI DEAL
There are very strong indications that the fanatic Pratap Naik has
struck a deal with the RSS Chief, Subhas Velinkar. The RSS brigade and even
senior BJP leaders have been making statements that the only languages which
deserve to be official languages in Goa are Marathi and Konkani in the
Roman script. The objective is to marginalise the secular elements in the
Konkani movement who have always strongly condemned the RSS conspiracy to
polarise Goa along communal lines.
